SEA DOGS HOLD ON TO WIN SECOND STRAIGHT - The Portland Sea Dogs won their second straight game over the Erie SeaWolves last night, 6-5. For the first time in the series, Portland jumped into the scoring column first, bringing in two runs in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Reese Olson. Wilyer Abreu led off with a walk then Ceddanne Rafaela drove him in with an RBI double to center, giving the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. Rafaela moved up to third on a groundout from Christian Koss then Binelas singled to right, plating Rafaela, increasing Portland's advantage to 2-0. In the second inning, Quincy Nieporte led off with a solo homer to left and made it a 2-1 game. In the third, Scott tripled and Nick Northcut grounded into an error at third base, bringing in Scott to make it a 3-1 lead. Erie answered in the top of the fourth inning with one out, Parker Meadows singled and Nieporte walked. Wenceel Perez doubled to right, scoring Meadows to cut into the Sea Dogs lead, 3-2. Rafaela doubled with one out in the fourth and advanced to third on a groundout by Koss. Scott walked, and Binelas crushed a three-run shot to right-center. It was his eighth long ball of the season and gave Portland a 6-2 lead. Erie came clawing back in the top of the sixth inning. Andrew Navigato singled and Meadows walked. Two outs later, Dillon Dingler walked to load the bases. Dane Myers doubled off the Maine Monster in left, scoring Navigato and Dingler, making it 6-4. Michael De La Cruz grounded into an error at third base, bringing in Dingler to make it a one-run game, 6-5.
BULLPEN STAYS STRONG - Portland's bullpen held strong last night after the starter Bryan Mata left the game in the sixth inning with two outs. Oddanier Mosqueda tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Jacob Wallace finished off the final inning with two strikeouts, picking up his first save of the year, locking down a 6-5 win for the Sea Dogs.
BACK IN FIRST PLACE - With the victory over the SeaWolves last night, the Portland Sea Dogs are back in first place in the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. The Hartford Yard Goats lost last night, their second-straight loss, falling into second place 0.5 games behind the Sea Dogs. The Bowie Baysox remain in first place in the Southwest Division, 3.0 games ahead of the second place Erie SeaWolves.
DEARDEN ON A STREAK - Tyler Dearden is currently riding an eleven-game on-base streak. In his 11 games, he is hitting .353 with seven runs and four doubles. He also blasted two homers last week in Hartford and has driven home five runs. During the streak, Dearden has drawn six walks and struck out 12 times.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - August 7, 1996 - To save a taxed bullpen in the opening game of a doubleheader, Clemente Nunez went the distance and allowed a franchise record 18 hits in a 12-1 loss at Canton-Akron.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brett Kennedy takes the mound this afternoon against the SeaWolves in his second start of the series. On Tuesday, he tossed 5.1 shutout innings allowing three hits and walked two batters. Kennedy struck out four and retired nine in a row from the first inning to the fourth.
