OHL Owen Sound Attack

Attack Take Record Setting Season Into Playoffs

March 21, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack has set franchise records in Wins (46), Points (97), tied a record for wins at home (26) and established a new record for road wins with (20). They captured the franchise's first ever regular season Western Conference title and Midwest division title and now with a city behind them, will try to capture an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup.

If you ask any player, they will always state that team success is more important than individual success, but that does not mean that a few individual marks cannot be boasted or bragged about.

Balanced Attack: The Owen Sound Attack received scoring from a variety of areas, having seven, twenty goal scorers in their lineup. The Windsor Spitfires are first with eight players, however; two of those players were acquired at the trade deadline doing most of their scoring for their former teams while all seven Attack forwards spent the entire season with the club.

On the Plus Side: Attack forward Robby Mignardi set a new Owen Sound franchise record for plus/minus in a season when he finished with a +35 rating. Bobby Ryan held the previous mark of +33. Captain Garrett Wilson tied the previous record, finishing the season with a +33 rating while overage forward Liam Heelis has a +31 rating.

Overage Presence: A big key to the Attack's success this season is having three overage players who contribute on a consistent basis. Liam Heelis, Robby Mignardi and Matt Stanisz combined for 62 goals and a +91 rating during the regular season.

Goal Oriented: Goaltender Scott Stajcer is on the mend, however; his timetable for a return is still unknown. If/when Scott returns, it will give the Attack three very capable goaltenders heading into the playoffs. Jordan Binnington is the youngest goaltender in Owen Sound history to get to 30 career wins. Jordan's 27 this season combined with his six last season give him 33 career wins as a seventeen year old.

Making a Point: While an early season injury kept him on the shelf for longer than expected, forward Joey Hishon still ended up with a career high 87 points and was tops amongst OHL players with a 1.74 Point Per Game average. Next best was Windsor star Ryan Ellis at 1.72.

All In: The Attack had four players who competed in all 68 games this season, compared to only one last year. Keevin Cutting, Jay Gilbert, Robby Mignardi and Liam Heelis all suited up for the complete schedule. Garrett Wilson competed in 66, missing two because of the World Junior Hockey Camp tryouts while Andrew Shaw and Gemel Smith also competed in 66 games.

Future Considerations: Attack General Manager Dale DeGray refused to move young assets (with the exception of an injured Curtis Crombeen) in exchange for other players at this year's trade deadline. The Attack has nine players currently on their roster who are either 16 or 17 years of age and received production from all. Andrew Fritsch (60GP, 63PTS), Jarrod Maidens (10G, 11A), Cameron Brace (11G,6A), Gemel Smith (8G, 8A), Brayden Rose (2G, 6A), Kurtis Gabriel (1G, 3A), Greg Staeger (0G, 3A) and Holden Cook (2G in 5GP) all pitched in while Jordan Binnington (27 Wins) carried the load in goal.

The Attack will take on the London Knights in the first round of the 2011 OHL Western Conference Quarter Finals. Game one is at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on Friday, March 25th with game two going the next evening in London. The complete schedule is listed below.
