Owen Sound Attack News Release
A busy final two weeks of the OHL season kicked off for the Owen Sound Attack on Wednesday night as they started a stretch of 7 games in just 11 days with a game against the Barrie Colts. Owen Sound took the first victory of the year in a 10-0 romp in Barrie, but the Colts rebounded to win the next three games in the series before falling in the latest game in Owen Sound. Looking to tie up the Battle of Highway 26, the Attack went with #1 netminder Mack Guzda. The Colts responded with Jet Greaves, who was outstanding in his last game at the Bayshore making over 60 saves in an eventual loss for the visitors. Coming into the night, the Attack were just four points behind the Guelph Storm for 6th place in the Western Conference with a game in hand over the defending champions. The Colts sat at 5th place in the East with a three point cushion over 6th placed Mississauga.
Stepan Machacek received his first start of the season, playing on a line beside Barret Kirwin and Sergey Popov. It almost immediately paid off when Popov and Machacek teamed up for a nifty play along the endboards that led to Machacek beating Greaves but not the post. The puck bounced away harmlessly, but it wasn't the last chance of the period. Dudas got into the action minutes later ringing one off the same post. Shots were 11-7 after the first ten minutes of the contest. Just after the ten minute mark of the period Kirwin found himself with a glorious chance to open the scoring, unfortunately Greaves was able to get in-front of the puck. The Attack would continue with strong pressure but were unable to get anything past Greaves. Likewise, Guzda was solid when called upon, including a great glove save through traffic in the final minutes of the period.
After control play for much of the opening period, the Attack started the middle frame much the same, however it was the Colts who found the back of the net first. After a partial break for Pearson was stopped, Greaves stoned Kirwin's point blank chance before Barrie took the play the other way. The Colts capitalized on the odd man rush to open the scoring. A successful penalty kill gave Owen Sound momentum again about halfway through the period, and it was Kirwin showing great determination to take the puck to the net. Fighting through a number of Colts players in front, Kirwin was able to slide his own rebound under a sprawling Greaves to even the score 1-1. It did not stay a tie game for long as Barrie found open ice during a 4-on-4 and were able to bury on the breakaway. Although getting chances the Attack were unable to even the score before the end of the period, and entered the intermission trailing 2-1.
A few minutes into the third period, Barrie extended their lead with a fortuitous bounce in front of the Attack net. Ethan Cardwell through it into a crowd and it bounced off an Owen Sound body and past Guzda to make it 3-1.. The Attack continued to pile up shots at Jet Greaves, but the netminder kept up his strong play at the Bayshore and wouldn't let any pucks past. After Connor Punnett scored his first of the year earlier in the game, he capitalized on a scoring chance for the second time to double his career tally and put the Colts up 4-1. Owen Sound outshot Barrie 13-7 in the final period and 43-31 in the game, but they fell to the Colts by a final score of 4-1.
The Hatten Home Hardware Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Igor Chibrikov. The Owen Sound Bug Juice Sr. B North Stars Three Stars were swept by the Colts, with Ethan Cardwell, Jet Greaves and Connor Punnett earning the honours.
The Attack hit the road to meet the Sarnia Sting on Friday. The game can be seen on Rogers Grey County and heard on 560 CFOS Bear Radio. The game will also be streamed online at OHLLive.com. The Attack return to the Bayshore on Saturday night to take on the Windsor Spitfires at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the MacVicar & McComb Sutton Sound Realty Attack Box Office and online.
