Atlético Ottawa suffered a heartbreaking defeat against first-placed Cavalry FC in front of a packed and passionate TD Place. Defender Luke Singh brought Ottawa level with a stunning acrobatic effort - a goal of the season contender - only for Cavalry to steal all three points with the final kick of the match, deep into stoppage time.
KEY MOMENTS
Having come from behind, Atlético Ottawa slipped to a heartbreaking defeat at home to top-of-the-league Cavalry FC.
Sergio Camargo gave the visitors the lead after a high turnover, cooly finishing beyond Nathan Ingham from a tight angle (45').
Atlético Ottawa equalized late as Toronto FC loanee Luke Singh met a corner with an acrobatic effort into the top corner (88').
As Ottawa pushed for a winner, they were stung at the death as William Akio gave Cavalry all three points (90'+7).
An even match was a tale of two halves with Atlético coming back to dominate the second period after a difficult first half.
"It hurts [the defeat], but that's the most spirit, heart and fight I've seen from the guys," said veteran defender Karl Ouimette.
The 30-year-old defender had three tackles (second most) and four clearances (most).
Atlético launched the club's first official mascot, Wally the T-Rex, who stole the pre-match show in their first appearance at TD Place.
An electric crowd of over 5,000 avid fans brought tremendous energy and "are the reason we were better in the second half" according to Head Coach Carlos González.
Atlético Ottawa heads on the road to face Vancouver FC next weekend, before completing a country-wide road trip that sees them play three matches in a decisive week.
Ottawa's next home match is on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, against Pacific FC.
This is a Military Appreciation Night in partnership with Coding for Veterans.
