June 6, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Atlanta United 2 News Release
KENNESAW, Ga. - Atlanta United 2 defeated Louisville City FC 1-0 Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Aiden McFadden recorded the lone goal, while Alec Kann earned the shutout in the win over Louisville. Jack Collison secured his first win in his first match as head coach for ATL UTD 2.
Atlanta created some great opportunities early on in the match. Connor Stanley earned a foul in the 19th minute. McFadden stepped up and served in a ball to the near post, where Chris Allan attempted to flick it past Chris Hubbard, but it went wide.
Atlanta found twine for the match's lone goal in the 27th minute. Caleb Wiley gained possession about 35 yards out on the left flank. The 16-year-old served in a curling ball to a crashing McFadden, where he made a diving effort to redirect the ball into the back of the net.
Louisville began to push forward in the second half in search of the equalizer. In the 71st minute, Louisville had a strong opportunity, when Corbin Bone served a ball into the six-yard box to Kyle Greig, who tried to get the ball on goal by way of a back heel flick. However, McFadden was there to clear it off the line.
In the 80th minute, the referee deemed that there was hand ball in the box and pointed to the penalty spot. Niall McCabe stepped up to take the penalty. Louisville's McCabe shot low to the keeper's right, and Kann made the initial save with a strong right hand. The forward tried to clean up his rebound with a one-time riffle, but Kann denied McCabe again. Kann had seven saves on eight shots on goal en route to his first shutout of the season.
ATL UTD 2 (3-2-2, 11 points) will return to action against Sporting KC II, June 9 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium (ESPN+, 7:30 p.m. ET).
