Atlanta Dream News Release
ATLANTA, Sept. 9, 2013 - Atlanta Dream guard/forward Angel McCoughtry has been named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league office announced Monday.
McCoughtry led the Eastern Conference in scoring last week, averaging 21.8 points as Atlanta went 3-1. Her 4.5 assists per game tied for first in the East, while her 2.5 steals per game ranked third.
McCoughtry opened the week Sept 2 with 16 points and four assists in a 92-82 victory over Los Angeles. On Sept. 4 she flirted with a triple-double in a win over Indiana that clinched a playoff berth for the Dream, finishing with 30 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, three steals and three blocks.
On Sept. 6 in New York, McCoughtry totaled 16 points, seven boards and three assists in another victory, while becoming the third-youngest player in WNBA history to reach 3,000 career points. She reached the milestone four days shy of her 27th birthday, and needed just 154 games to do it, which is tied for third fewest in WNBA history.
Finally, on Sunday against Phoenix, McCoughtry scored a team-high 25 points, while adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals. She also broke the Dream single-season record for steals during the game, and now has a league-best 85 this year.
McCoughtry, who earned the 11th Player of the Week award of her career, currently leads the league in scoring (21.8) and steals (2.8), and ranks sixth in assists (4.6). She has a chance to become the first player in league history to lead the league in scoring and steals in consecutive seasons.
Tulsa Shock guard Riquna Williams was named the Western Conference Player of the Week.
Other candidates for WNBA Players of the Week were Chicago's Elena Delle Donne and Epiphanny Prince and Connecticut's Tan White in the East, as well as Phoenix's Taurasi and San Antonio's Danielle Adams in the West.
The two-time Eastern Conference Champion Atlanta Dream is in its sixth season at Philips Arena as part of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Dream has qualified for the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season, including back-to-back conference titles in 2010 and 2011.
