Ottawa Voyageurs News Release
(OTTAWA) April 28, 2008 - With the first pitch of its inaugural season exactly two weeks away, the Ottawa Rapidz invited two players to attend training camp after the open tryouts held today at Ottawa Rapidz Stadium.
Over 60 young athletes took to the field early this morning to realize their dream of playing professional baseball with the new Ottawa Rapidz. From the impressive field, two were asked by Field Manager Ed Nottle to report for Spring Training that begins on Saturday, May 10.
Ottawa's Rudy Vallejos, a former Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) rookie of the year in 2006 with the London Majors, will take to the field with the rest of the Ottawa Rapidz as training begins. "I liked what I saw of Rudy today and I want to get a closer look - to do that I need to see him at training camp," said Field Manager Ed Nottle.
Greg Dumouchel, a versatile fielder who plays both first base and outfield will join Vallejos at Spring Training. "Greg swung the bat well and threw well - I was really impressed and I want to see more of him," said Nottle. "He's also been invited to Edmonton's camp but his goal is to play for the Ottawa Rapidz." Vallejos and Dumouchel will be assessed by Nottle during Spring Training and may be added to the roster of players who start the season.
In addition to the talented young men trying out, the Ottawa media was well represented on the field and drew notice from Nottle. "I was amazed by the number of media who showed up - they displayed great enthusiasm and there were a few who showed some real skill."
Media participants included Eric the Intern (CHEZ 106.1), Ken Evraire (A-Channel), Terry Marcotte and Brent Corbeil (CTV), Kenny Walls (Team 1200), Mario Aubé (Radio Ãnergie), Simon Bachand (CJRC 104.7fm), Marc Brassard (LeDroit) and Tim Baines (Ottawa Sun) all of whom put forth their best efforts and added to the competitiveness of the field.
Training camp for the Rapidz will begin Saturday, May 10th from 10am to 2pm and run until May 20th. The Ottawa Rapidz will play a pre-season game against their Québec Capitales rivals on May 18, starting at 1:05pm.
