Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) â The Houston Astros announced that former major league outfielder Dave Clark will manage the Corpus Christi Hooks during the club's inaugural season in 2005. That announcement was made today by Astros' Assistant General Manager Tim Purpura.
Clark broke into the majors in 1986 with Cleveland and spent portions of 13 seasons in the big leagues with six different teams. In 905 career games, Clark batted .264 with 62 homeruns and 284 RBI's.
During his first two seasons in the majors, one of Clark's teammates was pitcher Ken Schrom, who is now the General Manager of the Hooks. "Dave Clark is an outstanding baseball man and was a great teammate," says Schrom, who teamed up with Clark in Cleveland in 1986 and 1987. "As a hitter Dave had pretty good pop...he was a quiet but powerful man. Hooks' fans are going to enjoy having Dave at the helm."
Clark played parts of four seasons with the Indians. His big league career also included stints with the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1998, Clark concluded his major league career when he played 93 games with the Astros. His most productive season came in 1993, when he batted .271-11-46 with the Pirates.
Clark distinguished himself as a manager this past season when he led the Hickory (N.C.) Crawdads to the South Atlantic League Championship. The Class-A affiliate of the Pirates, the Crawdads were 85-55 under Clark's guidance. Hickory captured the North Division second-half crown with a record of 46-24.
The Hooks anticipate bringing Clark to Corpus Christi to meet with season ticket holders and the media sometime shortly after the World Series. The Astros have not announced any others members of the Hooks' field staff for 2005.
