Round Rock Express News Release
HOUSTON - Andy Van Hekken, Jason Bourgeois and Chris Shelton were named Round Rock Express Players of the Month for April, the Houston Astros Player Development Department announced Tuesday. Van Hekken was named pitcher of the month, Bourgeois earned offensive player of the month honors, and Shelton was selected defensive player of the month.
Van Hekken posted a 1-1 record with a 1.66 ERA in the month of April, allowing four earned runs in 21.2 innings over four starts. He led the Pacific Coast League through the season's first month with a 23-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio and ranked fifth in ERA. Van Hekken earned Round Rock's first victory of the season, tossing the first 5.0 innings of a four-man shutout April 10 at New Orleans. In his third start, Van Hekken scattered three hits and a walk with eight strikeouts over 7.0 scoreless innings April 20 against Omaha but did not factor in the decision.
Bourgeois led Round Rock with a .328 average (22-for-67) for the month of April, collecting two home runs and nine RBI. He led the PCL with 11 stolen bases on the month, including an Express single-game record four swipes April 15 at Oklahoma City. Of his 11 steals, 10 came in the season's first nine games before a hamstring strain forced him to miss three games. Bourgeois also drew 10 walks for a team-best .448 on base percentage.
Shelton posted a .990 fielding percentage through the season's first month with only two errors in 197 total chances. He also excelled at the plate, hitting .279 (19-for-68) with one home run and eight RBI. Shelton opened the season with a nine-game hitting streak and reached safely in all 18 starts during April.
Round Rock continues its four-game series against Nashville with the series' third game Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT at The Dell Diamond.
