October 31, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Marques in Chicago: "Have you heard about Will Ferrell's new ABA movie?"
Answer: Marques. Yes we have. In fact, we want to get Dick Tinkham to be a technical advisor on the movie. Dick co-founded the original ABA and Indiana Pacers and supplied Terry Pluto with most of the information he used in the famed "Loose Balls" book about the original ABA. In case people missed the story, here's what came out.
Hollywood, CA. Will Ferrell Dribbles for the ABA. Is there anything Will Ferrell can't do? Now he's playing basketball. Ok, he's probably not going to play it very well. Michael Jordan is great, but he's not very funny.
The Hollywood Reporter says New Line has hired Will to star in a new basketball comedy called Semi-Pro. The movie is set in the early days of the sport with Will as an owner-player-coach named Jackie Moon, dribbling in the long vanished world of the American Basketball Association (ABA). Jackie must lead his team on a desperate charge to make it into the big leagues. The film is being written by Scot Armstrong who also wrote Starsky & Hutch and School for Scoundrels. A New Line executive named Ken Alterman will make his directorial debut in it.
Aside from being a great opportunity to get Will Ferrell in a pair of striped knee-socks and an Afro, with Armstrong scripting the movie, it could actually be funny. When was the last time we had a good basketball comedy? Hope they do call Dick. He could sure help the movie. And Dick is funny too.
To reach Dick, email rptinkham@aol.com. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
