October 4, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Many: "If the NBA does not accept your challenge (Katrina benefit game), does not mean that the ABA isn't going to do anything?" (Or questions of a similar nature).
Answer: First, let me say that if all of the people emailing me everyday about the NBA/ABA Challenge game were to attend the game, we would raise a lot of money. The interest is truly amazing. Second, we are still hoping very much that the NBA accepts the challenge and offers to send over 10 players. I have heard that the NBA has given 10 million dollars to Katrina relief. In itself, that is outstanding, much more than the ABA can do. The ABA isn't the NBA. If the NBA can afford to give Amare Stoudemire $73,000,000; it can certainly afford the donations it has made to Katrina relief. The NBA/ABA Challenge Game is just another way to continue to help. However, to imply that the ABA isn't doing anything is not the case. ABA teams in Mississippi, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Orange County, Gallup, Indiana, - in fact - throughout the league have on-going Katrina/Rita relief efforts and are making substantial contributions regularly - and will continue to do so throughout the season. And the ABA will continue to contribute to each of these initiatives. Obviously, the challenge has generated much publicity. What it hasn't done is generate a response or the funds that could be raised through the game. And that's a shame. But you can bet we'll keep on pushing for the game and will keep our relief efforts going whether we play or not. If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com. -
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
