Clearwater Threshers News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - Cody Asche made his first appearance in a rehab assignment with the Clearwater Threshers on Friday, but Clearwater could not solve righty Chance Adams as the Threshers suffered a 5-1 loss at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Asche played five innings in left field, and finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout at the plate. The 25-year-old has been sidelined since Spring Training with an oblique injury.

Clearwater (22-12) remains atop the Florida State League North, but the Yankees (22-13) are now just one game back. The Threshers have had at least a share of first place in the division since April 16.

Ranfi Casimiro and Chance Adams dueled to a scoreless tie through four innings, before the Yankees broke out on the board in the fifth.

Casimiro (4-2) came one strike away from getting out of it unscathed.

Zack Zehner and Jake Skole each singled to start the inning, and both moved up 90 feet on Santiago Nessy's deep flyout to left. Casimiro then struck out Austin Aune looking on three pitches, and had Jorge Mateo at a 1-2 count.

Mateo served the next pitch into left field for a two-run single to put Tampa ahead. After a walk, Casimiro allowed a single to Billy Fleming that made it 3-0.

The lone run for the Threshers came in the sixth inning.

Gabriel Lino reached on an infield hit to start the frame, went to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on Malquin Canelo's fly out to right. Scott Kingery sent a grounder to short that allowed Lino to cross, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Tampa responded with two more runs off Casimiro with two outs in the sixth inning. The Threshers righty was charged with a season-high five runs on eight hits in his 5.2 innings.

Joe DeNato worked the rest of the way, holding the Yankees scoreless on two hits in 2.1 innings.

Clearwater will look to pull even in the series on Saturday, when the Threshers battle the Yankees at 6 p.m. Elniery Garcia (2-1) gets the ball for Clearwater against fellow southpaw Josh Rogers (0-1). The game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 5:45 p.m.
