TAMPA, Fla. - Chance Adams pitched his longest outing of his career as the Tampa Yankees (21-13) used clutch hitting to beat the Clearwater Threshers (22-12), 5-1, on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field
Adams (W, 3-0) tossed a career-high seven and two-third innings, holding the Threshers to one run on four hits. The right-hander tied a season-high with eight strikeouts and issued one walk, throwing 58 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
All five Yankee runs crossed the plate with two outs.
The Yankees broke a scoreless tie in the fifth. Zack Zehner and Jake Skole hit back-to-back singles against Clearwater starter Ranfi Casimiro. Both tagged up on a deep fly out to left by Santiago Nessy. One out later, Jorge Mateo lined a 1-2 pitch into left for a two-run single.
Mateo stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw by catcher Gabriel Lino. Abiatal Avelino walked and Billy Fleming followed with an RBI single to center, giving Tampa a 3-0 lead.
Clearwater scored its lone run in the sixth. Lino reached with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Malquin Canelo hit a fly out to the corner in right, allowing Lino to tag up to third before a ground out by Scott Kingrey plated the run.
Tampa answered with a pair of runs in the home half. Skole reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. With two outs, Nessy worked a full count and doubled on the 11th pitch of the at-bat, driving in Skole. Austin Aune followed with an RBI single, giving the Yankees a 5-1 advantage.
Casimiro (L, 4-2) allowed a season-high five earned runs on eight hits in five and two-third innings, walking one while tallying three strikeouts.
RHP Jordan Foley worked around a hit and an error in an inning and a third of relief, striking out a pair.
Zehner (3-for-4, R) recorded his third three-hit game. Mateo (1-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB) leads the team with 24 RBI. Aune (2-for-3, RBI) picked up his 16th RBI. Skole (1-for-4, 2 R, SB) is 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts.
The series continues on Saturday on Bark at the Ballpark night. Fans are invited to bring their dogs to the ballpark in support of K9's for Camo. All dogs must have a ticket and ticket proceeds will benefit K9's for Camo. Local pet vendors will be on the concourse. LHP Josh Rogers (0-1, 4.09 ERA) will make his third start with Tampa. LHP Elniery Garcia (2-1, 2.12 ERA) is scheduled to start for Clearwater. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. with the first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m.
Players & Coaches will begin wearing custom jerseys in support of Everyday Heroes. They will wear the jersey's May 14th, June 3rd, June 24th and July 4th. An online auction will begin for fans to bid on some of the jerseys through July 4th. Proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit Everyday Heroes.
