Anaheim Arsenal News Release
Anaheim, Calif., March 5, 2008 - The Anaheim Arsenal and the American Red Cross invite fans and Orange County residents to help save lives by donating blood at the 2nd Annual "Going for the Big Assist" blood drive held at Red Cross blood donor centers in Orange and Los Angeles. Everyone who donates blood at any of the "Going for the Big Assist" blood drive locations will receive a free ticket to the April 5th, 2008 Anaheim Arsenal vs. Los Angeles D-fenders NBA Development League game. Appointments for the blood drive can be made by logging on to www.GiveLife.org or by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543). Walk-in appointments are also accepted.
"The Anaheim Arsenal are proud to support the Red Cross again by hosting the 2nd Annual "Going for the Big Assist" blood drive," says Shu Muthyala, account executive with the Anaheim Arsenal. "We encourage all our fans to join us in this slam-dunk effort to help ensure there will be enough blood available for the hundreds of patients in our communities who need blood and blood products to survive accidents, heart transplants, sickle cell anemia treatments and other ailments."
Everyone who donates blood or platelets at a Red Cross donor center in Orange and Los Angeles Counties will receive a voucher good for one complimentary ticket to watch the Anaheim Arsenal take on the Los Angeles D-Fenders on April 5. The game, which is Anaheim's final home game of the 2007-08 season, will feature Arsenal players donning the jersey's of the Los Angeles Clippers, the Arsenal's NBA parent team. The D-Fenders will be outfitted in Los Angeles Lakers jerseys to round out the Affiliate Night. Vouchers will be available at Red Cross blood donor centers between March 1 and March 31 and will be limited to these two counties. Vouchers are nontransferable and not redeemable for cash. In addition, donors may purchase additional tickets to the April 5th game at a discounted price.
The Arsenal will honor the volunteers from the Orange County Chapter at Red Cross Appreciation Night at the April 5 game. Chapter volunteers will receive a voucher good for one complimentary ticket (with additional tickets available for purchase at a discount.) Red Cross youth volunteers will participate in a half-time "fan tunnel" to welcome the players to the court.
Friends of the Red Cross are encouraged to order regular price tickets ($17 floor basket and $12 loge basket) in the Red Cross section, and fifty-percent of the ticket price will be donated to the American Red Cross of Orange County. Continues Shu, "We look forward to having a large audience of Red Cross volunteers in attendance and having the opportunity to offer them a heart-felt thank you for what they do every day in our community."
Approximately 38% of the American population is eligible to donate blood; however, in Southern California, less than 3% donate on a yearly basis, resulting in chronically low blood supply levels. In the past few weeks, Red Cross inventory levels have dipped as low as a three-hour supply of Type O-negative blood and a one-hour supply of Type O-positive blood. These levels are acutely below the five-day supply generally considered adequate. Increased donor response is needed to maintain a safe and adequate blood supply.
The American Red Cross of Orange County provides a unique, community-based network to help people prepare for and respond to emergencies. All of the work of Red Cross is made possible by generous donations of time, money, and blood. At the Orange County Chapter, a total of 1,372 volunteers provided 31,165 hours of service to the community last year. Whether it is volunteering, taking a CPR class, donating blood, or making a financial contribution, there are many ways that people in our local communities can help change a life.
