Around the Ice

October 21, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release

PRACTICE SCHEDULE: The Ice practices Monday and Tuesday at the Pepsi Coliseum from 10-11:30 a.m., before departing for Shreveport, LA on Tuesday night.

OPENING NIGHT HISTORY: With the Ice's 3-2 shootout loss to Tulsa this past Friday, Indy's string of three consecutive victories on opening night came to a close, despite a well-played game by both teams. The overall opening night record for the 15 years of the franchise now stands at 4-6-5, but the team remains undefeated in regulation during its CHL years with a record of 3-0-1.

BAIRD PAYS IMMEDIATE DIVIDENDS: The Ice received immediate help in the offensive department from newcomer Jason Baird this past weekend. Baird, who practiced just one day with the Ice last week, felt comfortable right from the opening face-off as he tallied three of Indy's five goals on the weekend. The 6-1, 190-pound winger arrives in the "Circle City" after his pro debut last season in Cincinnati (ECHL). In 67 games with the Cyclones, he compiled 39 points (18G, 21A) and 160 penalty minutes.

STRUGGLES WITH TULSA: Rod Branch and the Tulsa Oilers continue to have the Ice's number. Branch, who stopped 40 shots in Tulsa's win on Friday, is now 7-1-0 in an Oilers uniform against the Ice the last two seasons. As a whole, the Ice is just 1-6-1 in its last eight meetings with Tulsa.

ICE FIRSTS: Nate Elliott, Marc Suderman, Jamie Carroll and Jerry Connell all played in their first pro games over the weekend...Jason Baird scored the first goal of the year for the Ice...Greg Olsen earned the first two minutes in the penalty box...Jamie Morris made the team's first save.

PLAYER NOTES: Jamie Morris was spectacular in net on Friday night as the fourth-year netminder turned back 47 of Tulsa's 49 shots...Bernie John needs 16 points to reach 500 for his pro career...Randy Holmes, who scored on a penalty shot Saturday night, is three points shy of 450 for his pro career...Andrew Taylor is eight points shy of 200 for his pro career...Kevin Popp is suspended for three more games due to an incident at the end of last season and is scheduled to make his Ice debut when the team hosts Oklahoma City on 11/1.

TEAM NOTES: The Ice was 1-10 on the power play over the weekend, but killed off an impressive eight of nine opponents' power play attempts...Indy is just 3-7-4 in its last 14 games with Memphis...The Ice was 2-8-1 in 11 games against Bossier-Shreveport last season.
