Barnes Named Goaltender of the Week

The Central Hockey League has today announced that New Mexico Scorpions center Chris Richards and Austin Ice Bats netminder Matt Barnes have respectively been named the Player and Goaltender of the Week for the CHL's opening week of action.

Richards, a 27-year old forward from Cornwall, Ontario, led the Scorpions to a pair of wins opening weekend, scoring twice and adding three assists in victories over Southwest Division rivals Odessa and Lubbock. Richards set up two third period goals to set the stage for the Scorpions 3-2 overtime win Friday against Odessa, then scored twice and added an assist in New Mexico's 4-2 win over Lubbock Saturday. Richards led the Scorpions offensively during the 2001-2002 season, with 27 goals and 39 assists.

Austin's Matt Barnes also enjoyed an outstanding opening week of action, backstopping the defending Southern Conference Champions to two victories. Friday in Oklahoma City, Barnes posted the first shutout of the young season, making 19 saves against the Blazers to secure a 1-0 victory in the first ever Central Hockey League game at the new Ford Center. The following night in Austin, Barnes was again near-perfect, making 20 saves while allowing just a single goal against in the Ice Bats' 3-1 win over the visiting Laredo Bucks.
