SCORPIONS RECAP â
SCORPIONS 3, ODESSA 2 (OT) â The Scorpions rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the final 7:38 of regulation before scoring a power play goal with 1:08 left in overtime for a 3-2 win over the defending Governor's Cup (regular season) champion Odessa Jackalopes. The Jackalopes scored a pair of goals in a 29-second span late in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Peter Ambroziak started the Scorps comeback with a power play tally, then Tyler Baines forced the extra period on a breakaway goal with 1:44 left. Arturs Kupaks drew a power play in overtime, then fed Pete Brearley for the game-winner. Luciano Caravaggio made 24 saves for the win in goal.
SCORPIONS 4, LUBBOCK 2 â Three goals in the second period proved to be enough as the Scorpions completed an unbeaten Opening Weekend with a 4-2 win over the Lubbock Cotton Kings. Chris Richards led the way with two goals and an assist. Peter Ambroziak scored for the second straight game and added a helper. Tyler Baines had two assists while Scott Myers stopped 29 of 31 shots for the win in goal.
SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS â
SAN ANGELO â The Scorpions and Saints meet for the first of five matchups this season on Friday in San Angelo. The newly renamed Saints are off to a quick start, taking a pair of home games this weekend from El Paso and Odessa to forge a three-way tie atop the Southeast Division with Austin and Corpus Christi. Former WPHL MVP Jamie Thompson leads the Saints with four points (3g-1a) while veteran Chris Peach has three points, all assists. Another Jamie has come up big early for San Angelo, that being goalie Jamie Ronayne. Ronayne was in goal for both victories, posting a 1.92 GAA and .932 save percentage. Defenseman Brent Currie leads the league with 34 PIM in the first two contests.
FORT WORTH â Todd Lalonde's Brahmas are also off to a 2-0 start after road wins in Wichita and Bossier-Shreveport, tying them with Memphis (2-1-0) atop the Northeast Division. Saturday's game is Fort Worth's only visit of the season to Tingley. The Scorpions make their lone trip to Fort Worth in February. Winger Chad Woollard leads the Brahmas with a goal and four assists in two games, while veteran Kyle Reeves is next with four points (3g-1a). Goalie Matt Mullin has recorded both wins, coming off the bench against the Mudbugs. He has a 1.22 GAA and .968 save percentage.
CENTURY MARK â Friday's win was significant in a number of fashions for Scorpions goalie Luciano Caravaggio. The overtime win over Odessa was his first regular season victory in a Scorpions uniform since a 4-3 win at El Paso on March 25, 2000. It was also his 100th regular season win as a professional. With Friday's win, Caravaggio moved into sole possession of second place on the Scorpions' all-time win list with 38, 16 behind former coach and goalie Tony Martino.
PUTTING THE EMPHASIS ON SPECIAL â The Scorpions special teams units came up big over the weekend. The Scorpions converted on 4-of-11 power play opportunities, as they currently lead the league at 36.4%. On the other side of the puck, the Scorps successfully killed off 15 of 16 opposition power plays at 93.8%, the lone goal against coming on a 5-on-3 Lubbock advantage on Saturday. Four of the Scorpions seven goals this season have come on the power play.
BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER â Scorpions winger Peter Ambroziak missed the last six weeks of the 2001-02 season. But he's back with a vengeance this season. Ambroziak has a power play goal in each of the Scorpions' first two games, and added an assist on Saturday. Ambroziak is now second on the Scorps' all-time list with 102 goals, and third with 206 points, 35 behind leader Sylvain Naud (241).
TIMING FACTOR â Defenseman/forward David Bourque joined the Scorpions on Saturday and recorded six penalty minutes in his first game against Lubbock. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of Gloucester, Ontario was claimed off waivers from Fort Worth last Thursday. Last year with the Brahmas, Bourque, 26, recorded career bests with nine goals, 24 points and 126 PIM. Ironicly enough, the Scorpions host Bourque's former team this Saturday.
STINGERS â Defenseman Stephen Margeson recorded his first point as a professional on Saturday with an assist on Peter Ambroziak's goal... Defenseman Mario Dumoulin is tied for third in the league for points by a defenseman with three in the first two games... Dumoulin had a pair of assists on Friday, followed by his first goal as a Scorpion on Saturday... Tyler Baines scored the game-tying goal on Friday and added two assists on Saturday.
