SPRINGFIELD, MA FEB. 14, 2011 - The Springfield Armor announced today that they have acquired forward Eugene Spates from the Maine Red Claws in exchange for Vernon Goodridge.
Spates (6'7, 220 lbs) was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 NBA D-League Draft after playing for BC Mess in Luxembourg.
With Maine, Spates was the only player on the roster to appear in all 35 games, starting five. Spates has averaged 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game and has scored in double figures nine times during the 2010-11 season. Spates exploded for a season-high 21 points in a Dec. 30th victory over Erie.
Spates, a native of Dallas, TX, began his collegiate career at Dallas Collin County CC and transferred to Northeastern to complete his final three years of eligibility (2006-09). While at Northeastern, Spates averaged 7.5 points per game in 95 games played.
"We are excited to add Eugene to our roster," Armor head coach Dee Brown said. "(Spates) is a great locker room guy and gives us flexibility at the 4 and 5 positions because of his ability to score and shoot the basketball."
Goodridge, whom the Armor traded to the Red Claws, played in 33 games for the Armor this season, starting 28.
Goodridge averaged 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 23.2 minutes per game.
"We appreciate the contributions Vernon brought to the team during the first half of the season," Brown said. "Going into the second half of the season, we needed to make a roster change to evaluate and develop more talent at the post position. We wish (Vernon) luck."
Spates will be in action with the Armor for the first time when the team returns from the All-Star break on Tues. Feb. 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in Fort Wayne. The game can be seen on nba.com/futurecast.
