Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Kirk Gross and Dan Trumble each drove in five runs and Long Beach piled up a season-high 20 hits as the Armada spanked the Chico Outlaws 16-0 Friday night at Nettleton Stadium. The win, Long Beach's fourth straight, moved the Armada into a first place tie with the Outlaws in the Golden Baseball League first half race.

Long Beach scored in every inning except the 7th and 8th, and they jumped on Chico starting pitcher Phil Springman for a quick 1st inning run when Chris Klemm doubled with one out and came home when Jaime Martinez ripped an RBI to left. The Armada went up 3-0 in the 2nd when Gross connected for his first homer of the year with a man aboard...then in the 3rd Gross delivered a two-run single to knock in Cole Cicatelli and Gabriel Mayorga to make the score 5-0. Reliever John Segovia took over for Springman in the 4th, and Long Beach gave the right-hander a rude welcome, as 11 batters combined for three singles, a double, three walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly to plate five in the inning and put the Armada up 10-0.

Long Beach took a 13-0 lead in the 5th when Trumble connected off Segovia, launching a three-run homer over the left field wall. Jake McLintock took over on the mound for Chico in the 6th and surrendered a run - John Kaplan led off the inning with a double and scored three batters later when Chris Wakeland grounded into a double play. While the Armada kept piling up the runs, Zick kept the Outlaws offense silent...the former St. Louis Cardinals farmhand allowed just two hits (a 4th inning Scott Dragicevich single and a 6th inning infield hit by Eric Pringle) and allowed just three baserunners through eight innings. Long Beach completed the scoring in the 9th, when Trumble went yard again, this time off McLintock with a man aboard. Righty reliever Andrew Layfield took over for Zick and retired Chico in order in the bottom of the 9th to seal the Armada's second straight win over the Outlaws.

Zick (4-0) struck out eight en route to the victory; Springman (2-1) went just three innings - the shortest start of his pro career - in taking the loss. Every Armada starter had at least one hit on the night, with Martinez, Trumble, Gross and Mayorga collecting three safeties apiece. Both the Outlaws and Armada are 22-12 on the year, and the two teams will battle for sole possession of first place tomorrow in game three of the four-game weekend set. Right-hander Jake McKinley (2-2) will be on the mound for Chico; Long Beach will counter with righty Jeff Heaverlo (2-3). Game time is 7:05pm...catch all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
