
Arizona's Alex Leavitt Wins Joe Burton Scoring Champion Award

The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Alex Leavitt of the Arizona Sundogs has won the Joe Burton Scoring Champion award presented in honor of Burton, the CHL's career leader with 985 points accumulated over 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers. Leavitt finished the regular season with 128 points (40 goals, 88 assists), 20 more than New Mexico's Konrad Reeder who finished second with 108 points.
The Edmonton, Alberta native ranked among the league leaders in several categories other than points finishing fifth with 40 goals and first with 88 assists. Leavitt finished the regular season on a 17-game point streak totaling 50 points over his streak. He finished the season on fire overtaking Laredo's Jeff Bes for the scoring lead in February and scoring 59 points (15-44=59) in the final two months of the season. Leavitt led the league with 38 multiple-point games and on 12 occasions scored four points or more in a single game.
Leavitt was one of the five finalists for the CHL Most Valuable Player award which will be announced later today. He also was named a member of the 2008 All-CHL team joining Laredo's Jeff Bes, Rocky Mountain's Brent Cullaton, New Mexico's Vladimir Hartinger, Colorado's Aaron Schneekloth and Bossier-Shreveport's John DeCaro.
The Sundogs finished the season on a nine-game win streak (Leavitt scored 10 goals with 21 assists during the team's win streak) and won the Southwest Division with a 39-19-6 record, 84 points.
The 2006-2007 Ray Miron President's Cup playoffs begin tonight with games scheduled for the DeSoto Civic Center (Mississippi vs. Texas) and at the Ector County Coliseum (Odessa vs. Austin).
