Arizona United Has Plenty to Play for in Final Game
September 16, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Phoenix Rising FC News Release
Week 26 - Arizona United Soccer Club may have been eliminated from playoff contention, but they will still be a part of the playoff race when the club takes on Real Monarchs SLC on Saturday, September 17 at Peoria Sports Complex (7:30 P.M. kickoff).
The Monarchs come into Arizona just one point out of the playoff race with two matches left in the season. An Arizona United SC win could put a major dent into the Monarchs' playoff hopes. But midfielder Blair Gavin said that he and his teammates aren't concerned with another team's playoff chances.
"It's just about winning," Gavin said. "We just have to win. That's what we're paid to do and the fans deserve a win in our last home game. We haven't given them as many wins as we would've liked. So we're going to go out and try to win for them and win for each other. That's the bottom line."
Following Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Portland Timbers 2, midfielder Tony Cascio had a similar outlook.
"It just comes down to pride," Cascio said. "We just play for pride. We play for our contracts, we play for our family. We go out there and just do it you know, kind of for the love of the game and just try and get some wins and I guess just go into next season with a few wins and a little momentum in the offseason."
Added goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski: "You know guys in this league (are on) a lot of one year contracts. Guys are fighting for deals here, fighting for deals in other places. You gotta keep playing well, individually and as a team."
Arizona United Soccer Club takes on Real Monarchs SLC on Saturday, September 17 at Peoria Sports Complex. Kickoff is at 7:30 P.M. and tickets can be purchased at www.ArizonaUnited.com. It will be the club's final home match of the season. Arizona United will have one more match next Saturday, September 24, in Portland, to finish off the 2016 season.
Scouting Report: The Monarchs' form has been average since they last played Arizona United, going 1-1-1 in three matches. But they are coming off an impressive 2-0 win over San Antonio FC. In that match, recent signee Charles Adams scored a goal and notched an assist. They also won't have the best offensive player in Ricardo Velazco, who was signed by Real Salt Lake on September 6. But the club is still plenty dangerous with Maikon Orellana (who scored the game winner against United in their last matchup).
Previous meeting: Arizona United SC's 17-match streak of scoring at least one goal was snapped in a 1-0 loss to Real Monarchs at Peoria Sports Complex.
