Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga - The 2009 CFL Canadian Draft will kickoff on Saturday, May 2 with TSN's live coverage of the first two rounds starting at 11:00 a.m. ET. The Toronto Argonauts currently hold the second overall pick, the club's highest seeding since it held the number two pick (OL David De La Peralle, Kentucky) in 1999.
The Argonauts have seven picks in the six round draft, including two of the first ten choices. The team will make their first pick of the day in the first round (2nd overall), then proceed to pick 10th, 18th, 26th and 34th overall in rounds two through five. The Boatmen will also pick twice in the sixth round (42nd and 43rd overall).
The Argos originally held the 4th overall selection, which they acquired from Edmonton in a 2008 trade of K/P Noel Prefontaine, but dealt the pick to the B.C. Lions on March 23 of this year in exchange for Whitby, Ontario native Jason Pottinger (B.C.'s 2nd overall pick in the 2006 CFL Draft). The Argos' second sixth round pick (43rd overall) in the 2009 CFL draft came from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a February 19 trade that brought the league's leading tackler, and CFL all-star, Zeke Moreno to Toronto in exchange for non-import DE Riall Johnson.
Commented Assistant GM/Director, Player Personnel, Greg Mohns, "The 2nd overall player in the draft is a very important pick for us. We will draft a player who can be a major contributor in an area of need. We want someone who can be a core player for us for the future, who can hopefully play in this league for 6-10 seasons. With that in mind, our draft strategy overall is that we will draft based on a combination of best available player and what our needs are. We also expect that the 10th pick overall will help develop our core Canadian content and it will then be up to Bart Andrus to help select our final choices as each round unfolds based on the needs of our coaching staff."
This year, the Argos will bring their fans closer to the draft using TWITTER. Fans are invited to ask Toronto's first two draftees questions via the Argos' TWITTER account (twitter.com/Torontoargos). One question will be pulled for each pick and their answers will be posted online. Fans can also submit questions for GM/Vice President, Football Operations Adam Rita who will, following the draft, also answer one to be posted online.
Media and fans are invited to watch the first two rounds of the draft live on TSN. Host Rod Black will be joined in-studio by CFL analysts Chris Schultz, Matt Dunigan and Glen Suitor, as they provide pick-by-pick analysis. CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon will announce each pick of the first two rounds. The entire 2009 draft will also be available on-demand at TSN.ca. Fans can follow the Argos picks at argonauts.ca or on cfl.ca.
