Toronto Argonauts News Release
Toronto - The Toronto Argonauts have won four consecutive games, including two straight at home, and host the Calgary Stampeders this Friday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m. in a 100th Grey Cup rematch at Rogers Centre.
Argos football, presented by Desjardins, features one of the CFL's most exciting and highest scoring offences. Last week at home, Ricky 'The Professor" Ray tied a 38-year old club record when he completed 17 straight passes. Meanwhile, the trio of "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Chad Owens, "The Human Torch" John Chiles and Jason "The Barber" Barnes are lighting up the opposition with a combined 9 touchdowns in their past three games. Khalif "Colossus" Mitchell and the defencewill be up to the challenge of stopping the Stampeders' star Canadian running back Jon Cornish.
On game day, presented by Tim Hortons, the Argonauts will celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the most important championship teams the city has ever known. Led by stars including Condredge Holloway, Terry Greer and Carl Brazley, the '83 team ended a 31-year Grey Cup drought for Toronto. As part of the festivities, current Argonauts heroes will exchange their uniforms for 1983-style retro uniforms including logos, helmets and jerseys!
1983 celebrations will begin early at the Frank's RedHot Pre-Game Tailgate Party outside Gate 11 at 5:30 p.m. where Marc Angelo will be grilling sausages for a minimum $2 donation and fans will enjoy the kick and toss inflatables as well as other activities. Following the tailgate there will be a special pre-game autograph session inside Windows at 6:00 p.m. near Gate 1. The 1983 team will then be together one final time on the field for an exciting halftime ceremony!
Juno award winner David Myles, the artist behind the best selling rap single in Canadian history 'Inner Ninja', will perform Friday night's national anthem. Portions of the in-game entertainment will be a tribute to the 1980s including special videos and classic music from the era. The Argos Cheerleaders, presented by Toronto Sun, will even get in on the action by pulling on their neon leg warmers, teasing their hair and dancing to the songs that defined a generation.
The Argonauts will again celebrate their Champion of Change initiative as part of the award-winning Huddle Up Bullying Prevention Program, presented by Tim Hortons. At each home game, the Argos have committed to recognizing student champions who make a difference in their school or community through acts of kindness, tolerance, and respect for others. Plus, Canadian Safe School Network will be the recipient of this week's 50/50 draw as part of the Argonauts' continued commitment to creating a safe environment in our schools.
Limited edition 1983-style fan merchandise including jerseys and t-shirts are now available at the TBJ shop at Gate 5, Real Sports Apparel in downtown Toronto and cflshop.ca. Also, for this game only, to commemorate both the 1983 team and the 30th anniversary of the historic Grey Cup win, fans can purchase both Blue and Bronze single game tickets for $19.83, Silver tickets for just $30 and Gold seats will be available for just $83.
