
Arbet To Enter Stockton's Black Sports Hall of Fame

SAN JOSE, Calif. (October 3, 2002) - Head coach Darren Arbet of the ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats will be inducted into the Stockton (Calif.) Black Sports Hall of Fame at its 16th annual induction ceremony on Saturday, October 5th. Arbet, along with six other Stockton sports standouts, will be honored at this years' banquet.
Arbet, the 2002 Arena Football League Coach of the Year, led the SaberCats to a league record 13 regular season wins and their first ever championship last season. Arbet attended Edison High School in Stockton where he competed in both football and track. He was also a four-year letterwinner at Sacramento State playing defensive end and competing on the Hornets' track team where he excelled in the decathlon, discus and shot put.
"It's an honor to be recognized in the community where I grew up. I'm very proud to be the first professional football coach to be inducted into the hall of fame," said Arbet.
Other athletes being inducted this year include former Edison High School a thletes Robert Beard (football, basketball), Otis Kelley (track & field) and Ron Small (football); former University of the Pacific athletes Dave Davis (basketball) and John Gamble (football); and former Franklin High School athlete Virginia Gorman (swimming, track & field).
Past inductees include former National Football League players Derek Kennard and Webster Slaughter. Kennard, a 10-year NFL veteran, played on the offensive line for the Dallas Cowboys and Slaughter, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1986, played receiver for 13 seasons.
The committee looks for individuals who have excelled in sportsmanship, citizenship and a continuing contribution to athletics in the Stockton and greater metropolitan area. The Black Sports Hall of Fame currently hosts 103 individual members plus a basketball and softball team.
