EVERETT, Wash . - The Everett AquaSox rode a big fourth inning in which they scored four runs and sent eight men to the plate to a 9-4 win over the Vancouver Canadians Wednesday at Everett Memorial Stadium. Austin Cousino was 2-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Everett attack.

Leading 1-0 despite going hitless through the first three innings against Vancouver starter Jairo Labourt, the AquaSox broke out in the fourth to take a five-run lead. Everett loaded the bases with two outs and Chris Mariscal delivered an RBI single to plate Kyle Petty. A throwing error by Canadians center fielder Roemon Fields allowed Wilton Martinez to score on the play as well and extend the lead to three. Mark Biggs came on for Labourt to face Cousino amd the AquaSox center fielder lined a two-run double to right that scored Nelson Ward and Mariscal.

Vancouver got back in the game with four runs in the top of the fifth. Everett starter Dan Altalvilla was pulled in favor of Leoncio Munoz after giving up a double and hitting a batter to start the inning. Munoz allowed a single to put three men on for Ryan McBroom, who cleared the bases with a double to get the Canadians within two at 5-3. McBroom moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Michael De La Cruz' sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game at 5-4.

But Everett would hang on to the lead and add some insurance runs in the fifth and sixth before breaking the game open with a pair of runs in the eighth. Taylor Smart crushed an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-4. The ball appeared to hit a metal sign beyond the fence, which, by stadium rules, would have been a home run.

However, the umpires ruled that the ball had stayed in play and Smart ended up at third base after advancing on the throw from the outfield. AquaSox skipper Dave Valle came out to argue the call and received his first career ejection as manager. Cousino widened the margin to 7-4 with his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth off Andrew Case that soared out beyond the right field fence. All three of Cousino's homers in 2014 have come at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Frogs added their final two runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Corey Simpson and a run-scoring single by Petty.

The AquaSox grabbed their 1-0 lead in the third against Labourt (1-2) without the benefit of a hit.

Getting a start for the streaking Jordan Cowan, Ward drew a one-out walk. He advanced to second on a balk and then stole third before Mariscal hit a ground ball to first base. McBroom attempted to get Ward at home, but his throw was late and the Frogs took their first lead of the series.

Everett starter Dan Altavilla received yet another no decision despite pitching well Wednesday. He gave up two runs as he worked into the fifth inning. He struck out four and walked three. Hawtin Buchanan (1-0) earned the win, his first as a pro after the Mariners made the 6'8" righty their 20th round pick out of Ole Miss this year. Cruz Pereira earned his second save.

The Frogs' Phillips Castillo had his 15-game on-base streak snapped when Sheehan Planas-Arteaga replaced him in the field in the top of the fourth inning. Castillo had reached base in every game since June 22 before going 0-1 with a strikeout Wednesday. After his eight-game hitting streak was snapped on June 28, Mariscal has collected a hit in all seven games in which he has made a plate appearance.

The Vancouver half of the third inning ended in strange fashion on an unassisted double play by the Everett first baseman Petty. With one out and Franklin Barreto at third and McBroom at second, Petty fielded Chris Carlson's grounder and caught Barreto in a rundown between third and home. It appeared that Barreto would be tagged out while McBroom advanced to third. But when Barreto was tagged as he headed back to the base, McBroom retreated toward second and was also tagged out by Petty.

The AquaSox wrap up their series with Vancouver and their six-game homestand Thursday at 7:05.

Jeffeson Medina (0-2, 3.71) will get the start for the Frogs in the rubber game of the series as Everett (7-19) goes for its first series win this season.

Alberto Tirado (0-0, 4.66) will get the start for Vancouver (15-11). AquaSox 2014 season and individual game tickets are available now online at www.aquasox.com and by phone at 425-258-3673.
