AquaSox Sweep Tri-City with 3-2 Win in 11 innings

The Everett AquaSox scored their second road sweep of 2013 when they defeated the Tri-City Dust Devils 3-2 in 11 innings Thursday night. Everett are now 6-0 on the road this season and have won five straight games overall.
Tyler Olson pitched a strong 6.1 innings and Ricardo Pereira earned his first win with three innings of scoreless relief. DJ Peterson scored the winning run in the eleventh on a wild pitch from losing hurler Huascar Brazoban.
Both teams had great chances to score early, but failed to pick up the necessary clutch hit. In the first inning, the AquaSox got Michael Faulkner to third and Jack Reinheimer to second with just one out following a walk, fielder's choice error and sac fly by Peterson. However, Justin Seager and Christian Carmichael stranded the runners.
Similarly, the Dust Devils threatened Olson in the first inning, as a pair of passed balls moved Alec Mehrten, who singled, to third with just one out. A walk to Wilfredo Rodriguez put runners at the corners, but Michael Benjamin grounded into a tailor-made 4-3 double play to end the threat.
The AquaSox had runners at the corners with one out in the second inning, after Phillips Castillo double and Reggie Lawson reached on an infield single. However, Bryan Brito bounced into an unconventional 3-6-1 double play, and more runners were left stranded.
After a pick off from Olson in the second ended another potential scoring chance, both starting pitchers settled in a bit. The AquaSox only recorded one hit in innings three and four, and Olson fought through an easy third and a more difficult fourth to keep the game deadlocked at zero.
The Frogs broke through in the top of the fifth thanks to a solid individual effort from Lawson. The San Diego native hit a leadoff single to left and then stole second with one out and Faulkner at the plate. Ashley Graeter's throw got away as he tried to catch Lawson, and so Lawson moved up to third with still just one out. Faulkner did his job, hitting a ground ball to the right side of the infield, and Lawson scored to give the AquaSox the lead.
Everett quickly added another run in the sixth. Peterson led off the inning with a single to left and Seager quickly followed with an RBI double to put the Frogs up 2-0. That chased Tri-City starter Ryan Warner, but his relief, Matt Pierpont, induced three consecutive outs to keep the scoreline manageable.
Olson powered through the Tri-City sixth and Pierpont did the same with the Everett seventh. Olson, who had never pitched past the fifth in his pro career, started the seventh for the AquaSox. He ran into trouble quickly, and left with runners at first and second and one out. He scattered seven hits in his 6.1 innings of work, striking out four and walking just one.
Unfortunately, Olson was charged with the two runs to follow after he handed the ball to fellow 2013 draftee Tyler Wright. The Dust Devils immediately executed a double steal and wright walked Jose Monzon to load the bases. Wright then threw a wild pitch to the next batter Cesar Galvez, which allowed Michael Tauchman to score from third and cut the lead to one. Wright got Galvez to ground out, but then walked the next two batters to force in the tying run. He ended the inning by striking out Rodriguez swinging.
Everett didn't threaten again until the eleventh, but Tri-City nearly squeezed home another run against Wright in the eighth. Michael Benjamin drew a leadoff walk and moved to third with one out after a sacrifice bunt and stolen base. However, Wright scored a big strikeout of Graeter and then induced an inning-ending fly out.
Pereira gave the Frogs the solid relief they needed to win the game in extra innings. He allowed at least one base hit in each inning he pitched, but erased them with a caught stealing, a double play, and the game's final out.
Everett pushed across the game-winning run in the top half of the eleventh mostly due to Tri-City blunders. Peterson singled with one out and then moved to third on a fielding error by Mehrten made on a potential force out hit by Seager. Brazoban threw wild to the next batter Carmichael, and Peterson cruised home to secure the Frogs' 12th win of 2013.
