Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - The Vancouver Canadians (24-10, 41-31) scored a run on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Everett AquaSox (19-15, 46-26) by a final of 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
John Housey (0-1, 3.07 ERA) gave up the game-winning run and took the loss for the Sox, who suffered the defeat in extra-innings of the scheduled seven-inning ballgame. Dan Tenholder (4-0, 1.86 ERA) won it for Vancouver and A.J. Griffin earned his league-leading 15th save.
With the win the Canadians officially clinch the second-half Western Division pennant, five games ahead of the AquaSox.
Vancouver struck first for the second consecutive game, plating a run in the second inning thanks to three straight hits, including a RBI-single by catcher John Nester.
The Sox responded one inning later when, after Robbie Anston singled and stole second. Kevin Rivers tied the ballgame at 1-1 with a two-out single through the middle. Rivers has now reached base in 28 consecutive home games.
Jeff Bercume hit a RBI-single on a 0-2 pitch in the fourth to deliver the go-ahead run for the Canadians, who tallied eight hits in four innings off
Austin Hudson and took a 2-1 lead into the fifth.
Left-hander Kody Kurowski made his AquaSox debut in relief of Hudson in the fifth and tossed one scoreless inning. Kurowski, listed at 6-foot-4, 270 pounds, was signed by the Mariners as a free agent out of Cal State Dominguez Hills in June and had appeared in 15 games for the Peoria Mariners this season.
Anston led off the bottom of the inning with his third hit of the night, eventually moving to third thanks to a walk and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs. With
Steven Baron at the plate, a wild pitch by Nathan Long allowed Anston to race home from third and tie the game at 2-2.
The Sox had a chance in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and second and one out but came up empty, sending the game to an extra-eighth inning. The Canadians scored the eventual game-winner when Ryan Landaeta led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wade Kirkland and came into score on a wild pitch by Housey.
Anston went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Sox, who are now 0-3 in doubleheader-games this season and 1-8 since 2005.
Game two of the twin bill is scheduled to begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Left-hander
Anthony Fernandez (7-3, 2.79 ERA) is set to pitch for the Sox against southpaw Ryan Quigley (3-2, 6.27 ERA) for the Canadians.
The nightcap will mark the final regular-season home game of 2010 for the AquaSox, who finish the season with three games in Vancouver. The Sox return home Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 7:05 p.m. for Game 2 of the NWL Divisional Playoffs.
