Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - In the ninth annual Everett Cup, the Everett AquaSox beat the Everett Merchants, 5-2. The Sox used five pitchers to achieve their seventh victory in the annual contest. Jose Valdivia was credited as the winning pitcher.
Seon Gi Kim started the game for the Frogs and struck out the first batter, Ty Holm, on three pitches, but then gave up back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. Kim got out of the inning without any damage with a ground-ball double play. The bottom half of the first inning looked promising for the Sox with the first two batters getting on base, but the threat ended with a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts.
The Frogs were the first team to score when Marcus Littlewood and Jamodrick McGruder each hit doubles to drive in a run in the second inning, putting the Sox up 2-0. McGruder and Faulkner each stole a base in the inning.
Third basemen Nate Mullins put the Merchants on the board in the fifth inning with a towering solo shot well over the left field fence off of Sox pitcher Jose Valdivia. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Frogs until the bottom of the sixth inning when shortstop Chris Taylor stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice. The designated hitter for the night, Carlton Tanabe, followed with a two-run double to the warning track in right field, giving the Sox a 5-1 lead after six innings.
Mario De Jesus pitched the eighth inning for the AquaSox and allowed the first three runners to get on to load the bases. De Jesus made it out of the inning, but surrendered one run off a sacrifice fly by Sam Parris, narrowing the Sox' lead to 5-2.
The AquaSox held on to win the game, 5-2, when right-hander Oliver Garcia shut the door in the ninth, ending the game with a strikeout.
The AquaSox will begin the 2012 regular season June 15 on the road against the Tri-City Dust Devils. The Sox will open at home on Wednesday, June 20 against the Spokane Indians.
