Portland Sea Dogs News Release
SAME SCORE, DIFFERENT RESULT - The Portland Sea Dogs beat the Somerset Patriots last night, 2-1. In the top of the second inning, Izzy Wilson lined a lead-off single to right field. Christian Koss then hit a groundball to the shortstop, Anthony Volpe, who committed an error throwing to second base and Wilson was safe. Tyler Dearden then singled home Wilson and the Sea Dogs took the 1-0 lead. The Patriots answered in the bottom of the third inning. Jesus Bastidas hit a lead-off double to right-centerfield then scored two batters later on an RBI single by Volpe and the game was tied, 1-1. With the game still tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Wilson led off the inning with a solo home run to right-centerfield and the Sea Dogs took the 2-1 lead.
NO WALKS FOR WALTER - LHP Brandon Walter was strong for the Sea Dogs in his fourth outing of the season. He tossed 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven. Through his 23.0 innings this season, Walter has not issued a walk and has struck out 29 opposing batters and has lowered his ERA to 1.17.
BEST ERA IN DOUBLE-A - The Sea Dogs pitching staff continues to be one of the best in all levels of Minor League Baseball. They lead the Eastern League with their 2.77 ERA and they own the third-best ERA through all levels of MiLB.
ESPLIN'S DOUBLE-A DEBUT - Tyler Esplin made his Double-A debut last night batting eighth and playing in right field for the Sea Dogs. In his third plate appearance of the night, he singled to right field but was left on base.
HOME RUN HEROES - Izzy Wilson sealed the deal last night for Portland with his first home run of the season in the ninth inning. The Sea Dogs are 6-0 when they hit home runs this season, 5-0 at Hadlock Field and now 1-0 on the road.
BACK ON TOP - With the victory last night, the Sea Dogs are tied with the Patriots for the top spot in the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. The New Hampshire Fisher Cats are 1.0 games behind Portland and Somerset while the Hartford Yard Goats are 1.5 games out of first place .
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - April 28, 2003: Justin Headley tied a franchise record with three doubles in a 7-1 Portland win over Reading. Headley also scored three runs and drove in two in the victory.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Victor Santos (2-1, 2.12 ERA) takes the mound tonight for the Sea Dogs. This will be his fourth start this season. His last start was 4/21 facing the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and tossed 6.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out six. He is holding opposing batters to a .194 average.
