Another Three-Run 8th Thwarts Voyagers

Great Falls, MT - The Voyagers have their first two-game home losing streak of the season after a 4-2 loss to the Helena Brewers Friday night at Centene Stadium.

Great Falls (22-18, 0-2) is 3-7 in the season series against the Brewers. Helena (19-21, 2-0) improved to 8-13 on the road and has won the first two games of the series to start the second-half schedule. The Voyagers home record fell to 15-6.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, Helena broke through with a run in the 4th. Jean Carmona reached with a leadoff single to left. Carmona later stole second and reached third on a catcher's throwing error. LG Castillo then fouled off eight straight pitches before a double off the wall in left-center brought Carmona home with the game's first run.

The Brewers added to their lead with a three-run 8th, marking the second straight night with three runs in that frame. Luis Avila led off with a double. Avila scored for a 2-0 lead as Yeison Coca reached on a bunt attempt that resulted in an error at first base receiving the throw. Jean Carmona walked. Chad McClanahan singled. David Fry produced an infield RBI single that scored Coca. LG Castillo made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Carmona.

The Voyagers finally broke through with a two-run bottom of the 8th. Jhoandro Alfaro, Ramon Beltre, and Steele Walker all started the inning with singles. After Walker's RBI base knock, Lenyn Sosa had an RBI groundout for the final run. Great Falls placed two in scoring position in the 9th but a groundout ended the game.

Great Falls outhit Helena 8-to-6, but the Voyagers committed three errors. Lenyn Sosa and Romy Gonzalez each collected two hits. On the mound, Victor Castaneda picked up his first win. Castaneda (1-5) went six scoreless innings and scattered three hits with one walk. Matt Portland took the loss. Portland (2-2) posted his second quality start after he allowed just one earned run on four hits with a season-high tying seven strikeouts and three walks. Michael Mediavilla earned his first save with a hit allowed, a strikeout, and a walk in the 9th.
