Austin Bruins News Release

For the fourth home game in a row, the Austin Bruins (16-5-0) didn t allow a goal. The first-place Bruins blanked the Brookings Blizzard (4-12-5) for the second straight game 3-0 Friday night at Riverside Arena thanks to superb goaltending and goals in key spots by rookies.

After killing off an early penalty, the Bruins power-play got an opportunity to take an early lead, and red-hot rookie Trey Dodd (St. Louis, MO) capitalized, beating Blizzard goalie Austin Priebe (Wausau, WI) with a backhander for his fifth goal of the season. Dodd scored two goals last Saturday against Brookings in the Bruins 3-0 win, and two the previous weekend versus Bismarck.

Brookings came out in the second period with a few great scoring chances, most of which were on power-plays, but Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) and his penalty-killers kept the puck out of the net. Bruins youngster Sam Kauppila (Gurnee, IL) scored a highlight-reel caliber goal to give Austin a 2-0 lead through two periods. Kauppila brought the puck into the zone on the left wing, dangled past the last Blizzard defender before beating Priebe for his fourth goal of the season.

Bruins Captain Josh Bretner (N. Potomac, MD) added a short-handed goal in the third period to give Austin a three-goal lead, as he feathered a shot past Priebe while being hauled down in the left face-off circle. Lehr stopped 41 Blizzard shots in his 14th win of the season. It was his third consecutive shutout, continuing a streak without allowing a goal that has reached 236:32.

The Bruins will travel to Brookings Saturday for a rematch with the Blizzard. The game is slated for a 7:15pm start. The game can be seen on fasthockey.com and will also be aired on 1480AM KAUS in Austin.
