Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Hoping to collect the first series sweep in franchise history, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park for game three against the Orange County Flyers on Thursday night. With the Flyers sending Kevin Altman (2-2) to the hill, the Seals answered with Chris Bodishbaugh (3-1) in the series finale.
Victoria moved into the lead in the bottom half of the second inning when Gabriel Riley was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run from Brett Flowers, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Billy Krause. The Flyers responded in the next half-inning, though, using a lead-off walk to Damian Jackson to even the score thanks to an RBI groundout from Scott Spiezio.
The Seals countered with more offense in the bottom of the third, receiving a double from Jamar Hill to cash Matt Kavanaugh after the designated hitter was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch from Altman and a walk to Arhart put runners on first and third, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brian Rios put Victoria back on top. The Seals then stretched their lead to 3-1 when Gabriel Riley drove in another run with a two-out base hit.
Returning to the offense in the bottom of the fourth frame, a single from Wilver Perez set up another RBI hit from Jamar Hill. Then, after Arhart was hit by a pitch and Rios walked to load the bases, a two-run single courtesy of Gabriel Riley lifted the Seals to a 6-1 advantage. Earning one run back in the top of the fifth, Orange County cut the deficit to four runs when a lead-off double from Jackson scored on an RBI single from Scott Spiezio.
As Chris Bodishbaugh remained strong on the mound for Victoria through the seventh inning, pitching his way out of Flyers pressure in the fifth and sixth, the Seals handed the ball to Ethan Katz in relief. With Petie Montero atoning for an earlier error with a clutch double-play in the the eighth, the Seals padded their lead in the bottom of that frame on back-to-back doubles from Hill and Arhart to stake a 7-2 lead.
Polishing off Orange County in the top of the ninth inning, Katz completed another brilliant team pitching performance from Victoria, and handed the Seals the first series sweep in franchise history with a 7-2 win in game three.
Chris Bodishbaugh was strong throughout the night on the mound, and improves to 4-1 on the season while Kevin Altman takes his third loss on the year for the Flyers. Victoria's offense was bolstered by Jamar Hill and Gabriel Riley, who combined for 5 of the 10 hits and posted 4 RBI's between them.
Victoria is now set to host their final series of the season at Royal Athletic Park when the North Division leading Calgary Vipers come to down tomorrow night.
