New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution defender Andrew Farrell has been named the 2023 Revolution Humanitarian of the Year for his work in the community and unwavering support of the club's various community initiatives. Selected by the Revolution's Community and Fan Engagement department, Farrell earns the honor for the second time in his 11th season with the club.
On Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, Farrell was surprised with the Revolution Humanitarian of the Year honor by a special guest, nine-year-old Owen Coole of Pepperell, Mass., a soccer player living with cystic fibrosis who was visiting the team with Make-a-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island to fulfill his wish of being a Revolution player. Farrell met with Owen before pre-match warmups to surprise him with his Revolution jersey, and Owen reciprocated by surprising the veteran defender with the news that he was the club's honoree for going above-and-beyond in the community throughout the 2023 season.
For over a decade, Farrell has been a mainstay at the New England Revolution's community events. Now completing his 11th season with the Revolution since being selected first-overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Farrell has firmly established his on-field legacy in New England as the team's all-time leader in games, starts, and minutes played. His impact off the field will be remembered just as fondly, as he has built a reputation for consistently going the extra mile to build meaningful connections with the club's charitable partners and the New England community.
Farrell has long been an unwavering supporter of Special Olympics Massachusetts and the Revolution Unified Team, again playing a major role at the team's signing day in April, their training sessions and home match, and the club's flagship benefit event, Bowl for a Goal presented by Arbella Insurance, which raised a record amount for Special Olympics Massachusetts this season.
For the second year in a row, Farrell showed his support for the Animal Rescue League of Boston. In addition to participating in their Too Hot for Spot campaign for summer pet safety in 2023, and helping support their adoption efforts this season, the Louisville, Ky. native visited the organization's Dedham Animal Care and Adoption Center with teammates to deliver over 200 pounds of dog and cat food, which went to pet owners in throughout Greater Boston.
The veteran defender, now the seventh player in team history to win the club's Humanitarian of the Year Award multiple times, is a regular participant in club and league efforts to Kick Childhood Cancer. To kick off Childhood Cancer Awareness month, Farrell joined local families for Box Car Movie Night at Gillette Stadium along with Shrewsbury-based non-profit Binkeez for Comfort.
Earlier this week, the Revolution announced that Carles Gil was voted the 2023 Revolution Team MVP by fans and selected as Players' Player of the Year by his teammates, the third time in five seasons he has claimed both awards. Dave Romney was voted the club's Defender of the Year by local media in his first season with New England, and 17-year-old Malden, Mass. native Olger Escobar was selected as the UnitedHealthcare Academy Player of the Year by the Revolution Technical Staff. The club's Golden Boot winner will be confirmed after tonight's match against the Philadelphia Union (6:00 p.m. ET), FREE to watch on Apple TV.
