Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (12-4, 38-48) defeated the Long Island Ducks (7-9, 53-33) 3-2 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday night to take the first two games of the weekend series. Bridgeport has now won 14 of their last 18 games overall, and stay atop the Second Half Liberty Division Standings.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson picked up a no-decision, tossing three and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on six hits, striking out eight and not issuing a walk. Long Island Starting Pitcher John Brownell (7-3) was tagged with the loss, going seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned runs) on eight hits, walking three, striking out eight, and surrendering one home run. Darren Byrd (1-0) picked up the win in relief, retiring all four batters he faced. Patrick Mincey came on in the ninth inning to shut the door for the 'Fish, notching his 18th save of the season. The All-Star right hander is now a perfect ten for ten in save opportunities in the Second Half.

Bridgeport took the early 1-0 lead off Brownell in the bottom half of the first inning with a two out rally. Welington Dotel reached with an opposite-field single, and then proceeded to steal his league-leading 29th base. Dotel would score the first run of the game on a run-scoring single by John Alonso, who was playing in his first game since July 19th. The Liberty Division All-Star drove home his 43rd run in 2015, tops on the ballclub. Dotel would finish the game with two bags swiped on the evening, giving him 30 overall. The 'Fish would add an insurance run off Brownell in the third inning on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded by Jobduan Morales, plating Dotel, who opened the frame with a bunt single.

Long Island would cut the deficit in half at 2-1 off Carson in the top of the fourth inning when Dan Lyons drove in Cody Puckett with a sacrifice fly. The Bluefish would get what proved to be a giant-sized insurance run off Brownell in the bottom of the sixth inning on a booming solo home run by Andres Rodriguez that left the entire Ballpark at Harbor Yard. It was the fourth roundtripper for Rodriguez, and the tenth big fly given up by Brownell on the season, most in the Atlantic League. The Ducks would threaten in the ninth inning, as Dan Coury launched his first home run in a Ducks uniform with two outs off Mincey, shrinking the Bluefish lead to 3-2, but that was as close as Long Island would get. Mincey struck out pinch-hitter Mike Blanke to end the game, and the 'Fish were victorious. Bluefish pitchers combined for a total of 14 strikeouts, matching a season-high most recently set on July 4th against the York Revolution. Bridgeport's pitching staff during the team's current three game winning streak has not issued a walk in 27 innings pitched, while giving up just five runs and striking out 28. Dotel led the way for the 'Fish with three hits.

Bridgeport concludes their series with the Long Island Ducks at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday, July 26th as the 2015 Ferry Cup resumes. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. CLICK HERE for tickets.
