NEW YORK, NY - Nov. 30, 2007 - The Bakersfield Jam today announced the acquisition of point guard Andre Barrett from the NBA Development League's available player pool. Barrett will be available for the team's home opener on Sunday, December 2 against the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
"Pairing Andre with Scooter (McFadgon) gives us one of the most potent backcourts in the league," said Jam head coach Jim Harrick. "We can't wait to get him out there and give him the reigns to our offense."
No stranger to the D-League, Barrett earned All-NBA Development League First Time honors as a member of the 2005-06 Florida Flame. He averaged 17.0 points and 6.6 assists during that season, including seven double-double outings during the season, recording single-game highs of 30 points and 15 assists.
An NBA veteran, Barrett has appeared in 63 NBA games with stops in Houston, Orlando, Phoenix, Toronto and Chicago since being signed by the Rockets as a free agent in 2004. Barrett was a member of the Bulls during the 2006-07 season and appeared in three 2007 preseason games with Chicago before being released in training camp.
Barrett was a four-year starter at Seton Hall University, posting career averages of 15.3 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.7 rebounds. He finished his college career as the school's all-time leader in minutes, ranked second in assists, and seventh in points. As a senior, Barrett averaged 17.3 points and 5.9 assists and earned All-Big East First Team and All-America honorable mention honors from the Associated Press.
The addition of Barrett is the second roster move of the season for the Jam that counts towards the nine allowed by D-League rules. To make room for Barrett, the Jam released guard Jamison Brewer.
The NBA Development League is the NBA's official minor league, and the first-ever basketball league with direct affiliations to NBA teams. Now in its seventh season the D-League's goals are to provide affordable, NBA-caliber entertainment to fans of its 14 teams, as well as continue to develop players, coaches, referees and front-office personnel for the NBA. As the single source for in-season player "call-ups" to the NBA, fans of the D-League enjoy the highest caliber of basketball played outside the NBA. In fact, former D-League players represented 10 percent of NBA players on 2007-08 opening day rosters, numbering 44 in total. In addition, the D-League has produced 25 percent of current NBA referees and 16 current NBA coaches, including head coach Sam Vincent with the Charlotte Bobcats. The D-League is an innovative and rapidly growing sports property that also serves as an experimental testing ground for new initiatives of the NBA and its teams, provides continuing education and professional development resources for its players, and is committed to serving its local communities through D-LEAGUE CARES and grassroots efforts.
