Anderson Joes News Release
AIKEN - Anderson had the pitcher they wanted, Jean Granado, starting. They had the park they liked - the Joes' two highest-scoring games of the season have come at Roberto Hernandez Stadium - and it still wasn't enough, as Anderson lost to Aiken, 4-3, in front of 1,205 Thursday night.
Granado, who had amassed a 3-1 record with opponents only hitting .195 off of him as a starter this season, only lasted into the third inning. Tweaking his ankle on a follow through on the mound in the first inning, Granado visibly limped the rest of the game and could not record an out in the third. All told, Granado allowed four runs in two innings pitched, allowing six hits and recording no strikeouts.
Aiken (18-12) scored all four runs in the first three innings, powered by Garth McKinney's two runs and Scott Houin's solo home run. With the blast to lead off the third, Houin became the 11th different Foxhound to hit a home run this season. It was the team's league-leading 45th of the year.
The Joes (6-24) did mount a rally in the ninth, fueled by a trio of Foxhound errors. Tim Sweeney, playing at shortstop for the third time this season, had committed a throwing error in the eighth to allow Hector Borg to score Anderson's first run. He then committed two more in the ninth, combining with Ricky Seabolt's fielding error at second, to allow two Joes runs to come across.
However, with runners at first and third and two outs, Borg flew out to left to end the game and quash the Joes rally one run short. Borg, Richard Quihuis-Bell and Normando Linero scored the three Anderson runs as the Joes dropped their fifth game in a row and sixth in a row to Aiken.
Jesse Krause earned the win for Aiken, improving to 3-2. He allowed just four hits and one run in 7.2 innings, walking two and striking out five. Granado took the loss for Anderson, dropping to 3-2. Gary Lee earned his first save of the year for the Foxhounds.
Notably, Daniel Howard pitched in his second game for Anderson, and for the second straight time allowed no runs in four innings pitched in relief. He struck out seven.
The teams resume their Palmetto Series on Friday night, when Anderson visits Aiken for a 7:05 first pitch. Catch all the action live on AndersonJoes.com starting with the Joes Pregame Show at 6:45.
