Redfish Fall to Peanuts, 3-1
June 21, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The Redfish came into tonight's game at the Charlotte Sports Park looking to take their third straight series opener but standing in their way was the South Coast League's top team, the South Georgia Peanuts. It was a pitcher's duel throughout and both teams used homeruns to propel their offense. The Peanuts got two and the Redfish knocked only one over the wall and that was the difference as the Redfish came up short, 3-1.
Daniel Chaffardet (1-4) looked sharp as he took the hill for the Redfish. After allowing a leadoff walk to Jasha Balcom, Chaffardet caught him sleeping on a great pickoff move. Chaffardet set the next two batters down looking. Austin Weilep (4-1), the Peanuts' starter, got a strike out and forced the Redfish to ground into an inning ending double play to make a scoreless 1st.
The Peanuts cracked the scoreboard first as Jon Zeringue, with Doc Brooks aboard, took a Chaffardet pitch over the right-field wall to give the Peanuts a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. Chaffardet settled down and didn't allow another run. He threw 5.0 innings with only 2 ER on 3 hits. He had a 2-1 walk to strike out ratio with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts.
The Redfish answered against Weilep in the bottom of the 4th as PJ Lehmann, the Redfish left-fielder, ripped a homerun to right field just to the left of the Days Inn sign and the Redfish were within a run at 2-1. Ricardo Gomez came on in relief of Chaffardet and pitched brilliantly. In his 3.0 innings of work out of the bullpen, he only made one mistake, giving up a solo homerun to Steve Garrabrants. Gomez had 4 Ks and only gave up one other hit and walked only 1 as he pitched to keep the Redfish in it. Tommy Sutton, a recent Redfish roster addition, made his first appearance for the Redfish and threw one inning with a hit and strikeout.
Weilep proved to be the difference in the game as the Redfish bats couldn't ever really get hot. He tossed 7.0 innings with 1 ER on 5 hits and struck out 9. Ja Jones entered the game in the 9th inning to face the middle of the Redfish order. Lehmann blooped a one-out single to center but Jones got William Plaza, the Redfish catcher who finished the night going 2-for-4, to ground into a 4-6-3 game ending double play.
The Redfish will look to try and notch a win for Interim Manager Denny Gomez, who is at the helm while Cecil Fielder is in Toronto, against the Peanuts tomorrow night, June 22nd. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com.
