Peanuts Open Series with Win Over Redfish

June 21, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, remained undefeated at the Charlotte Sports Park this season with a 3-1 win over the Redfish on Thursday night. Austin n Weilep started for the Peanuts and pitched very well while Jon Zeringue hit his fourth home run of the season.

The Peanuts got all the runs they needed in the top of the second inning. Doc Brooks led the inning off with a walk and then Jon Zeringue hit a homerun that just got over the wall in right-center. The Redfish did get a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a P.J. Lehman sole home run. In the eight, the Peanuts got their two-run lead back when Steve Garrabrants hit his team-leading sixth home run to right center.

The story of the night was created by starting pitcher Austin Weilep. Weilep went seven strong innings striking out nine and only allowing one run on five hits. Weilep moved to 4-1 on the season with the victory. Drew Shetrone came in and pitch the eighth inning for South Georgia no allowing a run and striking out two. Ja Jones got his first professional save as he pitched the ninth and faced the minimum three batters.

With the win, South Georgia is now 20-8 on the season and continue to hold a one-game lead in the South Coast League standings. The Peanuts will go for the series win on Friday night. Dumas Garcia will be getting his third start of the season. He has not allowed a run in his last two starts winning both of them. First pitch is set for 7:05. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" and worldwide at SouthGeorgiaPeanuts.com.
