Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors defeated the Mankato MoonDogs Thursday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park 11-5. The win gives the Anchors a 12-8 record in the second half and a 24-31 mark on the season.
Mankato got on the board early against Ryan Froom in the top of the first. Christoph Bono walked to start the inning and on a 1-2 pitch, David Metzgar went deep to give them a 2-0 lead.
The Anchors responded quickly in their half of the first. Drew Fearing singled with one out and came around to score on Trooper Reynolds first homer of the season, knotting the game at two.
In the second the Blue Anchors grabbed the lead. Kyle Richardson singled with one out and went to second on Matt Hopfner's base hit. Both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out. Steve Sada hit a high-chopper on the infield for a base hit to score Richardson and make the score 3-2 in Alexandria's favor.
The MoonDogs pulled even in the top of the fifth. Kevin Hall walked to leadoff the inning and went to second on Bono's one-out single. Metzgar flashed his power again with a double to score Hall and tie the game at three.
Former Blue Anchor Craig Nennig gave the MoonDogs the lead with a solo homer. Two batters later against Ciji Ramos, Kyle Weston hit a solo shot pushing their lead to 5-3.
Alexandria got one back in the sixth. Richardson walked with two outs and went to second on Hopfner's base hit. The runners pulled off a successful double-steal and the throw to third from the catcher went into left field allowing Richardson to score and make the score 5-4.
The bottom of the eighth brought plenty of excitement for the Blue Anchors. Nehwon Norkeh singled to start the inning and Richardson bunted his way on with a base hit. Both were sacrificed into scoring position for Dane Hutcheon who singled in one to tie the game at five. That is when the fireworks started. A wild pitch brought home Richardson giving the Anchors a 6-5 advantage. Then, Sada singled in Hutcheon for the seventh run of the night. After a ground out, Josh Merrigan unloaded on a baseball for a two-run shot making it 9-5. Reynolds was hit by a pitch and his college teammate Matt Duce hit a long homer giving a final score of 11-5.
Froom finished the night with five innings pitched allowing four runs on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Ramos pitched one inning surrendering a run while striking out one hitter. Kody Knaus threw 1.1 innings allowing one base hit and a walk punching out one batter. Tyler Hasper (2-1) got the win pitching one inning. Eric White finished the game with 2/3 scoreless.
