An Historic Sweep of the Saltdogs with 3-0 Shutout

LINCOLN, NE - Not the 2004 championship team. Not the 74 win 2015 team or the 61 win 2016 team. None of the St. Paul Saints teams since they had battled it out with the Lincoln Saltdogs in 29 previous series at Haymarket Park since 2001 had swept a series in Nebraska. The 2019 club has now accomplished that feat. Behind two-out RBI singles by John Silviano and Chris Baker and 7.0 shutout innings from Eddie Medina, the Saints blanked the Saltdogs 3-0 on Saturday night at Haymarket Park to complete the three-game sweep. The win is their fifth straight, the longest of the season as they improved to 52-33 on the season.

The Saints had an opportunity to get on the board in the first when they loaded the bases with one out. Dan Motl led off the game with a single to center. After a fielder's choice by Michael Lang, Brady Shoemaker's ground rule double put runners at second and third. A walk to Jeremy Martinez loaded the bases. Josh Allen would pop out and Chesny Young's hard shot up the middle hit off the leg of pitcher Spencer Herrmann who was able to pick the ball up and throw out Young to end the inning.

Saints starter Eddie Medina was magnificent and danced around the small trouble he got into. In the second, with one out, Josh Mazzola singled and Nick Schulz walked. Medina would get a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.

In the fourth, Mazzola singled with one out and, with two outs, Tyler Moore singled and Daniel Herrera walked to load the bases. Medina would get Steve Pascual to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Medina went 7.0 shutout innings allowing six hits while walking three and striking out eight

The Saints finally broke the seal off the game in the sixth inning with some big two out hits. Brady Shoemaker led off the inning with a single and Jeremy Martinez walked. Josh Allen's sacrifice bunt, however, was fielded by first baseman Curt Smith who fired a strike to third for the force out. After a Chesny Young pop out, John Silviano came through with an RBI single to left scoring Martinez to put the Saints up 1-0. On the throw home the ball skipped by the catcher Daniel Herrera and that allowed the runners to advance to second and third. That proved costly as Chris Baker followed with a two-run single giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.

Mike Devine made the lead hold up tossing 2.0 hitless, shutout innings to pick up his third save of the season.

The Saints begin a two game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Sunday evening at 4:00 p.m. at Shaw Park. The Saints send RHP Ryan Zimmerman (6-3, 3.67) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Parker French (5-4, 5.52). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
