Amerks Suffer Fifth Straight Loss

(Rochester)...The Rochester Americans were defeated by the Syracuse Crunch 6-4 tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter in their final visit to Syracuse this season. Rochester dropped its fifth straight game and nine of its last 10 to drop to 30-35-4-3, while Syracuse Crunch improved to 30-36-3-4 with the victory.

The Syracuse Crunch had two players with three points, Patrick Maroon (1+2) and Kyle Palmieri (2+1). Maroon had one goal and two assist, and Palmieri had two goals and one assist.

Rochester's Tim Kennedy (0+2) was the Amerks only multi-point scorer with two assists on the night. Mark Cullen (1+0) also added a goal in the game. Syracuse Crunch goaltender Jean- Phillippe Levasseur earned the win, stopping 33 of Rochester's 37 shots, while Rochester netminders' Tyler Plante and Marc Cheverie shared the duties in net in a losing effort. The two allowed three goals each. While Cheverie started the game and let in three goals on 10 shots, Plante then took his place between the pipes for Rochester at the start of the second period. Plante saved 13 of the 16 shots in the remainder of the game.

The Crunch got on the scoreboard first, just 39 seconds into the first period. Syracuse's Brain McGrattan scored his sixth goal of the season as a member of the Crunch. McGrattan gained controlled of the puck and took the initial shot, the rebound then went off a Rochester defenseman's skate and found the back of the net.

Cory Conacher, who skated in his second game as part of his amateur try-out with the Amerks evened things out at 1-1 at 6:19 of the first period, earning his first goal with the club. The puck went top-shelf with a flick of the wrist. Jeff LoVecchio and Colby Robak assisted on the goal. Rochester then scored the go-ahead goal just a little more than two minutes later when Bill Thomas sent a centering pass to Cullen for a one-timer.

The Crunch would even the game once more at the midway point of the first period when Syracuse's forward Palmieri scored on a breakaway. Maroon and Mark Mitera were credited with an assist. The Crunch took a 3-2 lead with just over a minute left in the first stanza. Crunch's Maxime Macenauer scored a shorthanded goal as teammate Palmieri was in the box on a two minute slashing penalty. Rochester's Cheverie went to the corner to make a play on the puck and passed it right to the stick of Macenauer, who had an empty net to shoot at.

Syracuse took a two-goal lead as Maroon earned his second point of the game and scored his 22nd goal of the season just five minutes into the second period. Palmieri and Nick Bonino earn the assists.

The Amerks answered only a minute later to make it a one-goal game again, as Caruso took the shot from the point and squeezed the puck through traffic and remain untouched. Jordan Knackstedt and Kennedy were awarded the assist. The Crunch answered right back to go up 5-3 as Palmieri scored his second goal of the game, this one came on the power play. Rick Scholfield and Maroon credited with the assist. That is Maroon's third point and second assist of the contest.

Syracuse took its biggest lead of the game when Macenauer scored his second goal of the contest, midway through the third period. Matt Kennedy received the assist on the play.

Rochester's Hugh Jessiman scored with less than 30 seconds left in regulation to make the final score 6-4. Kennedy and captain Chris Taylor were awarded with the assists. The goal occurred at the exact moment that Syracuse's Palmieri was exiting the penalty box for a two minute slashing penalty. The goal was not credited during the power play.

The Amerks then continue on the road on Tuesday, March 29th for the first of two back-to-back games against the North Division Manitoba Moose. The 8:30 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk.
