Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans and the Monroe County Libraries are again partnering to provide the "Reading Power Play," which teams Amerk players with local public librarians in support of reading.

During the past three seasons, Amerk players and their mascot, The Moose, have made nearly 75 appearances and accounted for over 15,000 books being read by kids from kindergarten to eighth grade.

The Amerks will kickoff the 2008 program on Tuesday, October 14th and begin their first of 23 reading appearances. The program includes players stopping by participating libraries and reading to kids, talking about the importance of reading, and giving a hockey demonstration. Each appearance also features a raffle for Amerk memorabilia and an autograph session by the visiting player and The Moose.

The second half of "Reading Power Play" is a reading program that uses the successful incentive formula employed in summer reading programs. Using the hat trick as a thematic vehicle, youth participants fill out a form for every three books they read, which then qualifies them for an entry in the grand prize drawing. The Reading Power Play runs from Monday, November 17th to Thursday, February 5th.

The Grand Prize includes dinner, the opportunity to participate in the ceremonial dropping of the puck and suite tickets to the Amerks' game on Wednesday, February 18th against the Grand Rapids Griffins.

For information about the program or to obtain the appearance schedule, go to the team's official website, amerks.com. A complete schedule is also available at the Democrat & Chronicle.com Info Zone in the upper atrium lobby on game nights and online under the Community link.
