(Rochester, June 23)... Amerks and Knighthawks President Lewis Staats made the second of five presentations to local cancer-related charities today, handing the American Cancer Society a check for $2,128 from the team's annual Breast Cancer Nights.

"With donations like this we can serve more people and do more wonderful things," said Michelle Lea Vercruysse, special events coordinator for the American Cancer Society. The gift will especially help Hope Lodge, which provides visiting cancer patients and their families a free, temporary place to stay.

"The money is so great because we recently moved into a new building," added Vercruysse about their new location on South Goodman. "We are now going to serve more residents at our Hope Lodge, which allows people from out-of-town to stay with us for free."

The American Cancer Society joined Gilda's Club of Rochester in receiving a donation this summer from the the American Hockey League and National Lacrosse League teams. The Knighthawks/Amerks Charitable Foundation, Inc., will also distribute the money to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Pluta Cancer Center and the Wilmot Cancer Center.

"Unfortunately these days there are not many families that have not been touched by cancer in one way or another," said President Lewis Staats. "With this in mind we are grateful that our teams along with our fans who support these special fund raising games are able to help in some small way by making a donation like this one we are doing today to the American Cancer Society."

The Rochester Americans and Knighthawks raised $15,644.55 through their annual Breast Cancer Nights at The Blue Cross Arena. Both teams wore pink jerseys on themed nights to raise awareness and money to fight the disease. The Knighthawks also participated in a league-wide initiative to fight breast cancer. The Knighthawks hosted their event on April 3rd and turned The Blue Cross Arena into a sea of pink with the wearing of pink helmets and jerseys, and the changing of their dasher boards from white to pink. The pink dashers were the first of their kind in NLL history.
