KENNEWICK, WA - The Americans took on the Portland Winterhawks today at the Toyota Arena in the second day of the 2021 Red Lion Preseason Tournament. Tri-City out shot the Winterhawks 28-16 but struggled to find the back of the net and was ultimately blanked 3-0.

The Ams came out strong tonight, out shooting the Winterhawks 12-6 in the first period and controlling most of the game. Winterhawks netminder Dante Giannuzzi stood strong and helped his team kill off two first period penalties keeping the game scoreless.

Portland went on their first power play of the night mid-second period as Landon Roberts took a penalty for goaltender interference. Marcus Nguyen was able to capitalize and put the Winterhawks on the board with his fourth goal in four games. Portland held their 1-0 lead into intermission. The Americans led shots 9-5 through the second period.

Lochlan Gordon replaced Gianuzzi in net for the third period. He stopped seven shots from Tri-City in the third frame to complete the shut out.

Rookie Ams forward Tanner Gould took a delay of game penalty early into the final frame. The Winterhawks once again capitalized on the power play with a goal from Kade Nolan. Carter Sotheran followed at the 12-minute mark with Portland's only even-strength goal of the night to give them a 3-0 lead.

Portland was 2/3 with a man-advantage and killed off all four penalties tonight.

Recently signed 2004-born netminder Nick Avakyan made his first WHL preseason start for the Americans and played the full game in net. The U.S. prospect played last season with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 16U.

Tri-City led shots 28-16.

Final Score: 3-0 POR

The Americans return to action tomorrow for a matinee game against the Spokane Chiefs at 2:05 pm in the Toyota Arena ("Rink B").
