Americans' Geekie Named WHL Player of the Month
April 3, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Tri-City Americans forward Morgan Geekie has been named the WHL Player of the Month for March 2018.
Geekie, a prospect of the Carolina Hurricanes, was originally selected in the third round, 67th overall, of the 2017 NHL Draft. In March, Geekie registered 29 points (16G-13A) and a plus-11 rating in 14 games as the Americans solidified a playoff spot and then swept the B.C. Division Champion Kelowna Rockets in the first round of the 2018 WHL Playoffs.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound product of Strathclair, Man. played in 10 regular season games, recording five multi-point efforts in those contests. With points in nine of the 10 games, Geekie was twice named the first star of the game as well as second and third star of the game once each.
His scoring took off in their first round series against the Rockets though as he recorded multi-goal efforts in all four games, finishing with 13 points (9G-4A) as the Americans advanced to the second round. His top performance came in the fourth and final game of the series when he recorded a hat trick, including the game-winning goal and insurance goal against the Rockets. Geekie also became the first member of the Americans to score nine goals in a series since Daymond Langkow accomplished the feat in the mid-1990s.
Geekie was named as the first star of the game twice, in games three and four, while earning a second star of the game honour in the opening game of the series. He was recognized in the WHL's Three Stars of the Night three times, earning a pair of first star honours and one second star honour.
Nearing the end of the first round of the 2018 WHL Playoffs, Geekie leads all WHL players in goals and is tied for second in points with 13.
The 19-year-old has now played in 10 career WHL playoff games, recording 14 points (10G-4A), including a pair of power-play goals and three game-winning goals. Geekie also wrapped up a strong 2017-18 WHL regular season that saw him record 84 points (30G-54A) in 68 games, including eight power-play goals and six game-winning goals. Through 216 career WHL regular season games, Geekie has 202 points (78G-124A), including 24 power-play goals and 13 game-winning goals.
The Americans are currently waiting to determine their opponent in the second round of the 2018 WHL Playoffs, with a potential series against the Vancouver Giants or Victoria Royals awaiting them.
