Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors were shutout by John Kelly and the North Shore Spirit 2-0, with Kelly outdiueling John Dillinger and setting a new Northeast League record for shutouts in a season Monday night in Allentown.

Kelly pitched nine innings allowing seven hits and three walks and striking out eleven. He now has four shutouts this season, which breaks the old record of three. Dillinger also pitched a complete game and he is now tied with Al Montoya with eight in a season.

Dillinger also set two team records. He struck out fourteen, breaking his own record for strikeouts in a single game (13), and setting a new team record for strikeouts in a single season. Dillinger now has 125 strikeouts, which leads the league.

But he did allow two runs over the nine innings. In the the third, Marcos Agramonte reached on an infield single, then John Schmitz tripled to right-center to make it 1-0. The Spirit added an insurance run in the ninth when Fran Riordan singled in Eddie Muth. Dillinger finished the game with six hits allowed, three walks and fourteen strikeouts.

The Ambassadors did have some good chances to score off Kelly. In the third the Ambassadors had first and third with two outs but Vic Davilla grounded out to end the inning. In the fourth, Greg Schmidt singled with two outs and stole second but Jorge Diaz popped out to end the inning. In the sixth, Ender Gonzalez doubled to begin the inning, but Kelly struck out Davilla, Marlon Roche, and Brian Macchi swinging to end the threat. In the eighth the Ambassadors would load the bases with two outs, but Macchi flied out to right to end the inning. And in the ninth, the Ambassadors had runners at first and second, but Jason Williams popped out and Cedrick Harris flew out to center to end the game.

Kelly gets the win and is now 11-2. Dillinger gets the loss and is now 6-7.

The loss is the fifth in a row for the Ambassadors, who are now 12-22 in the second half. North Shore improves to 20-13. The two teams play again tomorrow night with Chris Kelly taking the mound for the Ambassadors.
