Ambassadors Lose in Ninth to Lumberjacks

The Allentown Ambassadors left the tying run at second base in the ninth and lost another one run game, 9-8, Saturday night in Allentown to the Bangor Lumberjacks.

The game was scoreless through three innings, but that changed in the fourth. In the top of the inning, Bangor scored two runs of Ambassador starter Mike Riley. Donnie Ross started the inning with a single, then Lorenzo de la Cruz doubled. Todd Brock hit a sacrifice fly, and then with two outs, de la Cruz scored on a Tito Cruz error on a ground ball.

In the bottom of the inning, the Ambassadors responded with five runs of their own. Davilla began the inning with a walk, then Marlon Roche singled.. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. After a Greg Schmidt ground out, Brian Macchi drove in Davilla with a single, then Greg Stevens doubled home Roche. Cruz struck out, then Cedrick Harris singled to drive in two. Jorge Diaz followed with an RBI triple.

But Riley would give up four runs in the top of the fifth, with two home runs doing the damage, a three run shot from Donnie Ross to right field, and a solo home run from Juan Lebron. Bangor would add two more in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-5.

The Ambassadors got another run in the sixth off Bangor starter Tim Rall, then scored two in the eighth off reliever Santiago Henry. Schmidt singled to start the inning, then Macchi doubled him home. After Stevens struck out, Cruz reached on a fielder¹s choice when Macchi was thrown out trying to advance to third. Harris then doubled, driving in his fourth run of the game. He finished 3-3 with a single, double, and a triple, along with four RBI and one run scored. Diaz struck out to end the inning.

Jose Guerrero came in to pitch the ninth in his first game since May 26th when he broke his right thumb against Elmira. Back-to-back singles from Sandy Martinez and Donnie Ross put runners at first and third with no one out. But Guerrero induced a ground ball from de la Cruz and Martinez was thrown out a home. Then Lebron popped out. Todd Brock walked to load the bases, and then Edwin Thompson reached on an infield single when Jorge Diaz made a sliding stop of a ball hit up the middle, but could not get control of the ball to flip it to second base.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ender Gonzalez led off with a single against Jeff Sparks, who had come in to finish the eighth. Davilla grounded out, with Gonzalez moving to second. Roche then struck out looking and Dan Singletary, who had come into the game in the top of the ninth in place of Schmidt, walked. Macchi popped out to second to end the game.

The win went to Sparks, who is now 2-0. Jose Guerrero took the loss, his record drops to 0-1. Both teams are now 1-1 in the second half, with the rubber game of the series coming tomorrow afternoon at 5:05. John Dillinger takes the mound for the Ambassadors. It is 99.9 the Hawk night, with free t-shirts being distributed.
