New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[ AMARILLO, Tex.]-The Gorillas fought back on home ice with a 4-1 victory Thursday. The Amarillo win evened the best-of-seven game series at two games apiece.

Last night the teams came out of the gate fast with goals and power plays abound. Tonight, only one goal was scored in the opening 20-minutes and the penalties were substantially less.

Kevin Wilson grabbed his first point of the series as he notched a power play goal. The Gorillas worked the puck around the Scorpions zone and picked up their eighth extra man goal of the series.

Amarillo came out quick again in the second period with Bill Vandermeer cranking up a slap shot to the back of the net for a 2-0 Gorillas lead. The Scorpions fought back and got their momentum going.

Aaron MacInnis found Chris Robertson through the back door. Robertson pushed the puck into an open net cutting the lead in half.

The Scorpions were shorthanded for seven of the last 10 minutes of the middle period. MacInnis was called for a questionable boarding penalty at the 9:04 mark that sent him to the locker room with a major penalty and a game misconduct.

The Scorpions killed off the five minutes without allowing a shot. Less than a minute later, they found themselves down a man again. This time Amarillo converted when Chris Lipsett picked up a loose puck and scored with a wrist shot.

The Scorpions came out and did everything but score a goal in the third period. They owned the shots on goal board by a 14-5 margin but could not get it past goalie Shawn Conschafter. Vandermeer added a late empty net goal to seal the three-goal victory.

The Scorpions and Gorillas will enjoy an off day in West Texas on Friday. Game five will be on Saturday back at the Amarillo Civic Center. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m. Mountain Time and can be heard on 1050 KTBL.

The series returns to New Mexico on Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10. Tickets are on sale now for exciting Scorpions playoff hockey.
