Amarillo Bulls Fall 5-3 to Ice Rays

February 14, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls had a six game home winning streak against the Corpus Christi IceRays snapped on Friday night. A three goal second period erased a 2-0 Bulls lead and Corpus Christi held on for a 5-3 victory at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.

That six game winning streak the Bulls had dated back to the 2012-13 season, that same year that Amarillo went on to win the Robertson Cup National Championship.

Cody Gylling fired both Bulls goals, while Joe Leonidas collected the single. Goaltender Jacob Weatherly was solid in net despite the loss, stopping 40 of 45 shots he faced including some big ones in the second period to keep his team close.

You couldn't have asked for a better start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls with two goals in the first three minutes. The first one came on the power play as Cody Gylling tipped home a shot from Kasper Emanuelsson and Ryan Harrison at 2;28. Less than a minute later, Joseph Leonidas made it 2-0 with a shot form the point from Tristan Rostagno and Riley Christensen.

At the other end of the rink Jacob Weatherly was calm cool and collected making some very important saves including a breakaway from the IceRays Assistant Captain. The Bulls were outshot by the IceRays 16-10 in the first period.

A five minute major hurt the Bulls in the second period and allowed the IceRays to cut the deficit to just one goal at 2-1. That marker ignited the visitors who were able to score two more a short time later to take the lead 3-2. The Bulls Coaching Staff called a timeout immediately after the third goal and that seemed to settle down the homeside and get them focused to finish off the stanza. The Ice Rays outshot the Bulls 18-4 in the second.

Shorthanded goals had been an issue for both teams this season as they each have allowed six heading into the third period. That issue allowed each team to score. The IceRays scored early in the third to extend their lead to 4-2, but the Bulls didn't take long to close the gap yet again. Cody Gylling scored on a miss-communication by the IceRays on the face-off. He was allowed to score on a breakaway.

The Bulls pulled their goaltender in the final minute look to get event but the IceRays pushed the puck out of their zone and then score into the open goal.

The two teams combined for 66 shots on goal with the IceRays having the advantage during the game 45-21. There were 15 power plays during the game with each team scoring once.

It's Super Hero night on Saturday when the Bulls close out their home stand against the Corpus Christi IceRays at 7 pm. Fans will be able to get their picture taken with a variety of Super Heroes that will be on hand. The Bulls are wearing their special Superman jerseys for a second straight night. A live auction follows immediately after the game with proceeds to benefit the March Of Dimes.
