North Bay Battalion News Release
KINGSTON, Ont. - A franchise-record performance by Mike Amadio wasn't enough for the North Bay Battalion to defeat the Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday night.
Amadio scored all five Battalion goals for a team-leading total of 35, but Spencer Watson's power-play score at 12:10 of the third period was the winner as the Frontenacs held off the Troops for a 6-5 Ontario Hockey League victory.
The Battalion record for goals in a game had been four, accomplished seven times previously, most recently by Evgeny Grachev on Nov. 16, 2008, in a 4-2 decision over the Ottawa 67's at Brampton.
Lawson Crouse had one goal and three assists and Conor McGlynn one goal and one assist, and Chad Duchesne, Ted Nichol and Michael Dal Colle also scored for Kingston, which got three assists from Juho Lammikko. Starting goaltender Lucas Peressini allowed four goals on 19 shots before Jeremy Helvig came on in relief, facing 15 shots.
Kingston won a fourth consecutive game to move its won-lost-extended record to 34-14-4 for 72 points atop the East Division and Eastern Conference. The Frontenacs edged the visiting Windsor Spitfires 2-1 Friday night and host the Barrie Colts on Monday in a three-game home stand.
Battalion goaltender Jake Kment faced 42 shots, while Maurizio Colella earned three assists and Mark Shoemaker two. Battalion coach Stan Butler was issued a game misconduct after the second period for abuse of an official after disputing a non-call with referee Ben Wilson.
North Bay is 26-18-8 for 60 points, tied with the Niagara IceDogs for second place in the Central Division and third place in the conference.
The Troops trailed 5-3 through 40 minutes, but Amadio sent Peressini to the bench at 3:06 of the third period when he fired a Colella pass between the goaltender's legs from the edge of the left-wing circle. Shoemaker collected the second assist.
Amadio tied it at 6:16 when he cruised through the slot and tipped Cam Dineen's left-point shot past Helvig's glove.
With Zach Shankar off for slashing, Watson struck for the winner when he converted a McGlynn rebound, but the Troops refused to surrender. Kment left for a sixth skater with 1:24 to play, and Crouse and Dal Colle each missed the empty net before Dal Colle was whistled for tripping at 19:39.
The Battalion, skating six against four, stormed the Kingston zone, but Daniil Vertiy fired a shot into a crowd before Helvig sprawled to deny Dineen at the lip of the crease. The rebound squirted to Amadio as the buzzer sounded.
The Frontenacs grabbed an early 3-0 lead on goals by defenceman Duchesne 21 seconds into the game, Nichol's shot from an impossible angle at 4:26 and a power-play tally by Dal Colle, assisted by Warren Foegele and Watson, at 11:44.
Amadio hammered a rolling puck over Peressini's glove at 17:38, with Vertiy and Steve Harland drawing assists, but Crouse responded 19 seconds later, beating a screened Kment from the top of the right circle.
Amadio made it 4-2 at 6:42 of the second period, spinning off a check to snap the rebound of a Shoemaker shot off Peressini's left pad into the net.
Captain Amadio struck again at 10:31 to pull the Troops to 4-3. Mathew Santos dashed down the left wing and sent the puck in front, where a driving Amadio chipped it in off the right post. Colella made the first pass to spring Santos.
McGlynn put the home side back in front by two at 19:13 when he beat Kment low from the top of the left circle. Butler was adamant that Justin Brazeau had been held in the Kingston zone before the Frontenacs moved down the ice to score.
The Battalion visits Ottawa at 2 p.m. Monday in a Family Day matinee.
